If this is your first stye, the excessive crust build up that forms on the eyelid just might surprise you. The crustiness can be so bad, that it mildly seals the eyelid close to some degree. The shell of a hard boiled egg (egg still inside) retains heat for a very long period of time verse an ordinary hot cloth compress. The rounded ends of the egg fits into the eye area perfectly as though made specifically for the job how to get rid of a stye. Wrapping the hard boiled egg in a paper towel before placing on the stye is recommended, as the egg is very hot at first.

I am having pictures taken this Saturday and have this stye that just appeared right above my eyelashes. THis is my second stye. I used baby shampoo and eyedrops this morning before school. It is not like I can grab a warm wet washcloth or warm egg in the middle of class. What would be the best ways to treat this stye and have it mostly gone within 2 days? Is it even possible? I really do not want a lazy eye during these pictures for a Christmas present.
Sarah
You don’t have much time so try to use every opportunity to treat the stye wisely. Even if you can go to the restroom between classes to apply a warm compress. Maybe visit the school nurse.
After school spend lots of time with a compress, you still have a good chance to get rid of the stye or at least bring down the inflammation of the eyelid to where it’s barely noticeable.
So use every free minute you can.
I hope your eye stye doesn’t mess up picture day for you.
Good luck!
I’ve had a stye for about four days now but the swelling didn’t really start until yesterday and it’s literally on the bottom of my eyelid just below my eyelashes.
Last night I bought some eye drops for it and i’m not sure if this is a brand name or product name but they’re called “Similasan”, very helpful for reducing pain and a little swelling, but only temporarily.
I just tried the trick where you put your eye on top of a mug of steamy water (pretty helpful, but didn’t reduce swelling too much). So i’m now looking at it closer and I folded my eyelid inside out and found a white “head” I guess, so maybe it’s actually inside my eyelid? I’ve tried the warm compresses too but nothing has really helped more than the eye drops, which aren’t to helpful either. Any thoughts on what I should try now? I’m hoping to avoid a needle in my eye at all cost hahaha.
Kyle
As you found out those drops don’t do much to get rid of a stye. Just temporary relief, but the same affect could be had by applying these stye treatments.
Keep in mind for any of these methods to work one has to be aggressive. Multiply times throughout the day will give best results. You can’t expect one application of any stye treatment to do much. I’m just saying, because you didn’t mention how often these were put to use.
How you describe this stye, and having to fold back the eyelid to see it. I’m gonna say you have an internal stye.
Internal styes are much harder to work with. Lots of heat to the area is your best bet. This will help bring it to a head and drain. Also try to gently massage the stye in between application with a clean fingertip.
Come on now. You can’t be afraid of a little needle to the eye…..Don’t blame you there on bit.
Good luck and get rid of that stye!
I get styes on a regular basis. Most are on the inside of my eyelids not on the edges where most people get them. Over the past 5 years I have had probably 5 to 6 of them removed by out patient surgery. The needle in the eyelid along with the porcedure is a bit stressful and does have some pain. I think the worst part is seeing the needle coming towards your eyelid. But the relief is well worth it.
I have two right now on the upper left eyelid. I have been appling the hot compress for the past 3 days with no luck. I’m going to try the tea bag and see if it will speed up the process.
My questions:
With the styes on the inside of my eyelid how will the tea bag work with my eye lids closed?
Do I need to try and keep my eye lid peeled back so the bag comes in contact with the stye?
I know bacteria is what creates the clogged oil glands on the eye lids which creates the stye.
What is the cause for styes? Is it diet? Like greasy food, chocolate, environment that I work in, etc?
Thanks for any and all help.
Hey Russ
You are the second this week that shared their stye surgery and to confirm the “needle” is just awful. The moment that needle begins its journey and you can see it coming must be terrifying. Oh boy, not something I’d want to experience, not at all.
Internal styes are awful. More pain, discomfort and harder to accelerate healing time. To be honest, forget the tea bag and totally concentrate on delivering heat. Heat for long periods of time will be more beneficial when dealing with internal styes.
Bad news….it’s much harder to get an internal stye to burst open, unlike styes that form on top of lids. Not saying it won’t but much harder. For many this means another trip to the doctors, another surgery.
I would have to suggest trying the egg method. I tested this egg trick myself and was very surprised, how much heat and how long it actually provided. Another idea, to use those small personal heating pads. The kind that needs to be activated by squeezing to start the heating process. Lastly, the old school heating pad that just needs to be plugged in.
To answer your question….Internal styes are commonly cause by a staph infection connected to a gland called the “meibomian.” located underneath the eyelid. The formation of the stye takes place under the eyelid (internal) thus causing more pain. While just being a pain of a spot to treat, even with the above methods
So your dealing possibly with staph, meibomian gland, and internal formation of a stye. Unlike a common stye found on top of eyelid, commonly caused by blocked oil glands as the popular cause.
I wouldn’t fear food, though environment is a possibility, as is sharing contaminated cosmetics or lack of good eyelid hygiene.
I hope this helps some.
Best of luck and hopping all ends well without surgery.
Hi there!
I got my first stye 3 years ago, and I tried a few things back then but nothing worked all that well. My mom gave me a gold ring and I rubbed it on the stye a couple times a day and within 2 days it was gone. I don’t know if it was chance or not but I just wanted to share that the method did work for me.
I have one again now and found your site, I plan to use a few of your methods because I would definitely like this to be gone quickly, as I work in a bar and probably won’t impress the customers with my big ugly stye. So thanks for the tips and I hope they work for me!
Kendra
Hello Kendra
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
So you have a stye now, and if I may ask, “why not use the gold ring this time?”
Knowing that a stye for the most part lasted a week + /- a few days before it heals on its own. Also taken in account that one is relatively healthy without any other issues, healing should be quick.
So, if a person with a stye, rubs a gold ring on it for a week. Would this be proof it works? Or has the stye has just ran its normal course?
I’m asking this, because as you mentioned “you tried a few things, nothing worked.” Then you tried the gold ring, but how long into having the stye was it? Could the same results happen, if it was a penny used to rub the stye with? Or was it just the end of the stye cycle?
I’m just not a believer in this tale of gold rings.
You are in a great position at the moment to prove otherwise. If you are up to the challenge.
Don’t use any other method other then rubbing the stye with gold.
But it’s a quick off the cuff challenge, I just put forth, it would have to be done in some way, where the challenger can prove the gold ring was all that was used. I have to think on this more. I would love to put it (gold) to the test.
Ok, enough about the gold ring
Try the hot compress, add a tea bag to the eye at the same time. Do it as often as you can. The mug trick has helped lots of folks out, might be worth your try too.
Styes are ugly, but most can see past it and the person you really are. Turn down the bar lights some, you’ll be good to go
Best of luck Kendra!
Can a popped stye give u pink eye?
Crystal
Nope, you have no worries there. Styes will come to a head, “drain” or “pop” on their own (most of the time.) Other times these methods above are needed to help this cycle along a bit quicker. Once this draining happens, complete healing is just around the corner.
Hope this helps
I don’t have so much as a comment as more of a question. I’ve got styes on both of my eye lids on the tops. I had my doctor remove the styes under and on top of my left eyelid last week and am lazily applying the warm compresses. I will share that I think all you are saying on your site is very good advice – the needle I got in my eyelid to “numb” the pain was the second most painful needle I’ve ever gotten in my 61 years of life. So HEED THE WARNINGS HERE people. I’m upping the soaking of my eye lids to quite a few times a day now as I absolutely don’t want to go back thru the doctor giving me shots again. My QUESTION is, with the tea bags, how long can you use say one bag before you discard it and open another bag package? I can’t see using a new bag for each soaking as that would be and extreme use of tea bags that aren’t necessarily too cheap. It does resterilize after dipping into microwaved water again – I was just wondering if you could give me an idea of how many uses for each bag. Appreciate your time and hopefully your replying to this question. I hope I can find my way back to this site to see if you reply to me – here’s hoping .. . . . . Arly
Hello Arly
Your question on the tea bags, very interesting. I liked it. Just might have the answer for you.
To get more life out of a single tea bag, try this.
Grab a cup, fill with just enough water to throughly soak the tea bag. This should be more or less 1/4″ of water. When you are ready to use the tea bag, squeeze out the excess water back into the cup and save. Apply to the stye. At this point you can dip the tea bag back into the highly concentrated tea and re-soak. This will allow multiple use of a single tea bag. I’m sure doing this you could easily reuse until the bag starts to wear. I would say reusing one, would last at least half a dozen times.
Arly, thank you for sharing your experience of having stye surgery. It sounds like an horrible ordeal to have gone through. The “needle” as you stated is so “painful,” this is exactly what I’ve heard too. Could not imagine having a needle to the eye, just thinking of it makes my stomach turn.
I hope you do find your way back here. I would love to interview and learn more about this surgery, if you are up to it.
The information would be very beneficial to all.
Have a great day
i’ve been getting styes for a few years now, i actually had one last week on my left eye and now i have have another one on my right eye. only this time it’s much bigger and my eyelid is very swollen, i have been doing the hot compres thing alot for at least three days now and everytime i shower i let the water run over my eye too, but it wont come to little dot so it can drain
its very painful what can i do to speed up the process so it can drain asap??
please help
Hello Nina
Try this, mix the hot compress and the tea bag treatment together. By doing so, this may help a bit more.
Soak the tea bag in warm water. Prepare a clean cloth to be used for the compress, by heating and folding to fit the eye area. Before applying lay the tea bag on the compress so it is positioned to contact the stye first. Hold against the stye as long as possible, or until the compress cools. Repeat as often as you can. This just may work better for you.
I have a question (s) and would like to ask.
What do you feel is your cause for having so many recurring styes? Have you narrowed down the issue at all? Any idea?
I really hope by adding the tea bag works. I hate hearing about the pain you are in. Hopefully those stye heal up fast.
Best of luck Nina!
I really need some help because I have had a least 6 different styes in the past five months and takes a long for them to go away. I need the fastest way because I have school tomorrow and don’t want people to see the stye. Also what could be causing it my doc says it’s makeup but I don’t wear any. Any idea’s.
Sierra
Your doc says, “it’s makeup.” I also believe makeup is a leading cause for styes within the female group.
What you didn’t pass on is “information.” What did the doctor recommend to stop your stye problem? Other then telling you the cause.
The fastest way to get rid of a stye with the above treatments comes down to…. “how much time you dedicate to apply these applications.”
One or two treatments most likely will get you nowhere, but spending the day and applying multiple times throughout will be more rewarding.
You seem to get quite a few stye in a short time period. This may be of some concern. Answers to “WHY” this is are needed. If you can get to the bottom of the underlying problem. You may get rid of your stye problems.
Best of luck to you…
I have never heard of such rubbish of how to get rid of a Stye, I will always use the old wives tale that has always worked for me, as soon as the Stye starts you take off your Gold 18 Kt ring and you rub it over the Stye gently. this takes the swelling down and stops the infection before it starts……. and I have never had a problem, and I have been using this for over 60 years………….if you do not believe me, that´s up to you…….BUT IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME…………..Try it
Garry
Yeah, I don’t believe it one bit, and would never put much faith in a “old wives tale.”
Lets start off with the meaning of “old wives tale.” Is a type of urban legend passed down by old wives to a younger generation. These tales are superstition, folklore, unverified claims with exaggerated and/or untrue details. Taken from Wikipedia.
So you say, “try it.”
Ok, lets do this and put a challenge out to all the folks that come here and are suffering with a stye seeking help.
***To all my visitors***
Try Garry’s method of rubbing your stye with 18 carat gold.
Please report back with the results.
Does it have to be 18 carat gold Garry?
Will 10, 14, 24 carat gold work?
Just one more question(s) for you Garry.
Why are you searching the internet for “How to get rid of a stye” if this “old wives tale” does indeed work? I mean, you are here on my stye site, but as you stated, “you have no problems.” I Find it kinda strange for you to be looking for a solution to a stye problem, when you have none.
Lastly a few more humorous “old wives tales” connected to styes.
1. If you watch a dog poop, you will get a stye on your eye.
2. You get a stye in your eye from peeing in the middle of the road.
3. Those who deny a pregnant woman the food she craves will get a stye in their eye.
4. Take a large nail or a piece of iron and rub gently around the area where you have a stye…Gone!
5. At the first sign of a stye, take a needle, point it at the stye, move it towards the stye 3 times while saying, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.” Just don’t touch the face, eye or stye while doing so.
6. Stand at a crossroad and say, “stye, stye leave my eye. Take the next one coming by.”
These “old wives tales” above were found on the internet. They can’t put anything on the internet that’s is not true. Right?
Have a great weekend
P.S. Garry are you not the same person who left this same comments months ago? You were having a “traveling” stye problem, if I remember correctly. Your stye traveled from the eye area to your nose. Right?
We did go back and fourth on this gold ring tale a few times. I ended off, offering you to debate this tale, if you had facts to back up your claim. You stated something along the lines “the healing property within gold, but not sure what is was.” Remember?
Offer still stands….
I’ll even sweeten the pot for you. If you are ambitious enough, I’ll consider giving you the opportunity to spread the word via your own article. Posted live on my site.
Ok I have a stye and I also have school tomorrow… I am very nervous cause I DONT want anyone to make fun of me. I tried almopst everything to get rid of the stye and now I dont know what to do…
Raneen
You don’t have much time left before school so use what is left wisely.
Get a clean washcloth, soak it in warm water and hold it to your eye. Repeat, repeat, repeat…. do it as often as you can with the time you have left.
Many applications is the key here, to get fid of a stye fast.
I hope you do have a stye free day tomorrow
…. but be prepared for the worst.
And I have a question, do mostly girls get Stye eye more than boys, because I see mostly girl comments.
Kayla
That is a great question. I was also interested in finding out the answer, so I added the “Question Poll” found on the upper right hand side.
Currently out of 307 votes, 212 are gals and 95 are guys. Percentage wise, 69% gals to 31% guys.
Finding the results interesting, but it gives no hard fact data to “why” gals seem to get styes more then guys, thus leaving me to come to my own conclusion. More or less I’m have to guess here….
My thinking it all comes down to cosmetics. Eye and eyelid make up. Contaminated make up, sharing with others or not. Daily hygiene, meaning the cleaning off of make up each night.
That is my suspicions, maybe I’m wrong, could be right though. I mean the cosmetics is where gals and guys different. At least for the most part.
Thank you for commenting. Very interesting indeed.
So I have been feeling sharp pains on my upper eyelid and at first I thought it was the makeup products I’ve been using so I stopped using my eyeliner and mascara, and when I got home from school a couple of days ago I noticed that the pain had gotten worse, everytime I blinked and I saw a bump on my upper eyelid and my whole eye was red and swollen, and I started to freak out because I’m only 12 and I didn’t know what it was, but once I looked over your blog I figured out it was a Stye. So thank you because you just saved me from panicking like crazy, and also I’m using the Baby Shampoo that you reccommended so thanks.
Kayla
I’m happy to have calm you down. Styes are very common, but if it is your first one, freaking out is understandable.
Just make sure that your parents are aware of it, so they can keep tabs on its healing progress.
Good on the baby shampoo, and also try some warm compress treatments too.
Hope that stye is gone soon
Hello
I know for certain i have a stye but , what is it? Yesterday Morning i noticed a small red bump on my face.. so when i was about to go to bed i took a clean wash cloth and put hot water on it and used it as a hot compress but, when i woke up this morning it was bigger and redder.!!! Picture day is next monday and i was wondering how can i get rid of it over the weekend?
Thanks
Arionna
Hey, I like your name.
Styes are infections from blocked pores and eyelash follicles. That is the basics of it anyways, though one can go much deeper to the underlying problem of causes, such as staph infections for an example.
Picture day…..oh boy. Well, the good news is you have all weekend to apply these treatment. The simplest one, that works great is applying a warm/hot compress to the eye.
Use the compress as many times as you can over the weekend. The stye may or may not be gone by picture day, but hopefully it will go down enough not to be noticed.
Work with the compress, as time is ticking away…..
Best of luck
Omg.. The tea bag worked so well I first found out I had a stye about five days ago and I done the tea bag one and it was gone in the next week
I suggest that one its great !!
Hi Sally
Very cool
Yes, the tea bag does work great. I’m happy to hear it did good for you.
Thank you for coming back to let us know.
Have a wonderful day
i have 2 styes on my right eye i have almost tried everything they have been their for almost a week and a half and have not gone down (their not that big)
advice please?
brennah
When you say, “you have tried everything.” Is that everything, as in the stye treatments above?
Without knowing, exactly what you have tried, I’m gonna suggest starting the hot compress treatment, along with really paying attention to eyelid cleanliness.
Start there and hopefully you can finally get rid of those styes.
Good luck !
Hi
Thanks in advance.
Thursday night at work my left upper eyelid was sooo painful!! It hurt to blink. Friday I woke up and it was swollen and more painful!! Today..even more swollen and red and painful. There isnt any pus or anything yet that i can see, or no lump, just swelling. But it does feel abit sticky, Is it a stye?? And if it is…please help. I swear its causing my headache too on the left side of my head and its making me miserable
Hi Samantha
I must say from the description you have given, it sure sounds as if you have “Pink Eye.” The stickiness is caused from the eye weeping, you have no lump, but it’s swollen/red/painful. My gut says Pink eye….
Anyway you can still apply these method, and should help out quite a bit.
One thing to keep in mind, Pink eye is contagious. You may want to see a doctor get some antibiotics asap.
Best of luck…
Hi,
I had what I believe to have been a stye about 6-8 months ago. It lasted for about 3 months then went completely away. However, this past week I started getting a “sore spot” on my other eye, and since then I have again what I believe to be a stye. It’s totally different than the first one I had though. With the first stye I had no pain, no tenderness, no irritaion, nothing except a bump. But with this one, it’s very painful, can’t put make-up on, (even with a gentle brush!) can’t touch it, nothing without it hurting very bad. Every time I blink it hurts. Why were my styes so different? They’re in the same spot, just different eyes. Also, I’m scared this one will last 3 months like the first one. As I’ve seen people comment, they make you very self conscious. What should I do? Please help!
Hello Rachel
It is hard to say why the pain with this stye is more painful then your last. It could just be “The Perfect Spot” this time, and on a different eye, so the the reaction to this eye stye may change also.
You didn’t mention if these styes are on top of the eyelid or underneath. The ones that form underneath the lid tend to be much more painful.
I hope you don’t go three months this time…..so be very aggressive, multiple times during the day, don’t be afraid to mix any of the stye treatments together.
Very important….Eyelid hygiene!! Wash the eye more often, and remember to remove that make up!!
Try not to let yourself get down, instead apply your energy to “kicking it” with these treatments.
Like I said, please don’t suffer longer then you have to. If this stye last much longer then two weeks, visit a doctor.
Have a great weekend!
Hi! Yesterday I developed an extremely painful eye pain and I woke up with a red puffy stye.
This weekend I have a Daytona gymnastics meet so I need some more tips fast. Thanks and please reply
Hello Nina
These stye treatments are the best that I have to offer at the moment. Your best bet, be very aggressive applying whichever one you pick. Put a twist on the methods, by combining them together. Something like this… tea bag on the eye first, then apply a hot compress.
Best of luck this weekend at your meet.
Thank you! I enjoy your site and I hope no more evil styes show up. You have a great website going on and I will be back FOR SURE!
Nina:)
Nina
Thank you for such a nice comment.
Evil styes…hahaha you got that right!
Stop back anytime and “kick it” at this weekends meet !
Hi I am back! No styes yet so these treatments really helped. That comment above with the name Nina was not me. I wonder who that is. Well… Good luck answering questions.
Nina
I’m happy these stye treatments have helped. Thanks for coming back to visit.
Looks like more then one “Nina” around. Cool
If you throw me some luck, I’ll take it!!!
Have a great weekend!
I’ve had about 2 styes in the past 4 years in my left eye. Each time the stye has lasted almost exactly one week even though I used a lot of these treatments. I now have another one and I don’t know if I’m doing these remedies the right way. I get very insecure when I get them and I don’t if I should buy an ointment of some kind now. Advice?!
Trusty
One week to get rid of a stye is not bad at all. If you are saying these stye treatments helped and within a week your stye healed…..You are doing them correctly. Keep doing what you are doing
Styes do have that tendency to mess with our insecurities, but try not to let it get you down, it’s just a stye.
Those ointments may help just to lessen any eye discomfort that styes produce, but using them to get rid or heal a stye not so good. I believe these methods if properly applied would serve you much, much better.
Have a great day!
This is my first stye in about 16 years. What causes them? I haven’t worn make-up in weeks, especially eye make-up. I did have major colon surgery. Could the trauma have caused the imbalance? I’m using warm compresses and I’m going to try the warm tea bag compress. The stye’s not painful, just really annoying. I can’t open my eye all the way and sunlight makes it worse. Stinky little buggers.
Hi Stacy
There can be quite a few reasons that cause eye styes to form.
Here are a few…
Oil glands become clogged/infected on the eyelid.
Hair follicle become clogged/infected base of eyelashes.
Staph infection is a big time cause of styes.
Stress.
Sharing eye make up which could be contaminated.
and the list goes on….
I’m sorry to hear about your past colon surgery, I hope everything turned out fine, but I have no idea if the two are/could be connected. Anything is possible though…
You are doing good by upping the compress treatment to include the tea bag. Do it as often as you can and you will see results.
Have a great day Stacy!!
Hi I’ve had my stye for maybe 2 or 3 months. It popped by itself then my eye kept swelling and turning red. Just this morning it came back and I want it gone. Tried the hot compress but doesn’t work.
Please help. Tired of people asking about it.
brisa
Having a stye for 2 or 3 months…..
Lets dig in a little deeper here.
The everyday run of the mill common stye should run a course something like this…
After the eye stye forms within 3-5 days it should come to a head, break open, drain. Give it another 5 or so days to completely heal.
Any suspected eye stye that goes on much longer, may indeed not be a stye after all. Three months you have been troubled by this, might be time to cross the common stye off the list.
What then could it be?
A “Chalazion” is often mistaken or identified by many folks as a stye. These eye conditions can last up to a month or more before going away on its own. Same treatments for a stye is recommended, but in many cases surgery will be needed for removal.
“Blepharitis” is another possibility, which is a long lasting condition which may cause styes.
This is when, I have to stress “see a doctor.” Three months is way too long. What you think is a stye, just might not be….
I hope you get your eye checked out soon.
All the best…
Hi, I have had about 3 styes since January this year, this one is the third and seems to be the worst of all
They are really irritating and I have been trying some of the methods above but nothing seems to be helping, every time I go to sleep it gets much worse and I have eye-drops which also seem to be having little effect.
I go back to school on Monday (3 days) and I need to get rid of it, any suggestions?
Hello Adam
Are these styes forming on different locations on the eyelid? Or the same spot each time?
When nothing is working, like the stye methods listed here and your suffering continues, my best advice at this point is a visit to your doctor. It would be wise to find out, what is the underlying problem for your bout with recurring styes. It could be a simple as staph infection in the body. Do you know positively what you have is indeed a common stye?
I don’t mean to push you away without helping, but there is a point when everything you are trying fails…..visit a doctor.
Those eye drops, if they are the common over the counter, store brand type, they won’t do much good. You may be able to get prescription eye drops, which would be a better choice.
If you can’t or won’t see a doctor. Then really follow these listed stye treatments, and be aggressive. Meaning applying multiply time throughout the day, and really pay attention to eyelid hygiene.
Hope this helps….
Have you ever heard off hot rice for a stye
Hi cathy
If you mean filling something like a sock with rice, then heating. Yes I have. A few folks that did leave a comment has mentioned this stye treatment tip. When I’m ready to update this post, it will be added.
Thanks for commenting and have a great day!
Umm, hi. About two days ago, the area around my eye started itching. I thought it could be just pink eye. When I woke up yesterday, there was a tiny white dot on the tip of my bottom lid, right next to my eye. I was confused about how it could be a pimple (acne-prone, dumb hormones) basically on my eyelid. Now the area is swelling and getting redder. It’s my first week of high school. Is there anyway to make it less noticeable?
Kaycee
First week of high school and sporting a stye….bummer
The best way to make it less noticeable, is to get rid of the darn stye completely. It may take a few days, but it will be gone and forgotten.
But….if you must, make up might hide it some. Wish I had some great make up tips to share, sadly I don’t.
Just remember to remove the make up asap, when school is over for the day. Give the eyes a good cleaning and apply one of the stye treatments above.
Hope your stye heals quickly
Hi, I’m not sure if what I’m dealing with is a stye or not lol..
Last night my upper left eyelid was getting sore and looking a bit swollen. I put a hot compress agaisnt it and hoped that the swelling would go down but when I when I woke the next morning it was worse. My eyelid is really swollen and very sore when I touch it. I’m not if it’s a stye or not cause there’s no stickiness or pus anywhere around the eye..
I read on some sites that a hot compress was best for it while other sites told me that pressing something cold agaisnt it is better for the swelling so I don’t really know what to do. Today I pressed camamile teabags agaisnt it, would that be any help?
Hello Paula
If you are not sure if it is a stye, could it be Pink Eye? Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) does have the symptoms which you describe, so the possibility may be there. Could be just the early stage of a stye forming also.
The hot compress works best for a stye, bringing it to a head, thus draining in a quick manner. After a stye has burst, drained, then a cold compress would do good to bring down any left over puffiness. So hot and cold compresses can work depending on the stage which the stye is in.
Lots of folks have left comments on how well “Camamile Tea bags” work. It is a good choice, but also give time for the compresses to do the job also. Doing both treatments is even better.
Hope this helps….
hey
i have a stye like after every 2 weeks its very irritating for me, cant go to parties, cant wear makeup, cant enjoy social life…, i tend to get a stupid stye evry second week… please tell me how to prevent styes. what kind of diet(specifically) will benefit me to get rid of styes???? please help.
Regards
Hey shanzay,
Styes every two weeks? That’s not good at all
I would be more concerned with eyelid hygiene, over a diet to begin with. First place I would start, trashing all eye make up. Contaminated make up and you can bet on having styes.
Second, pay attention to better eyelid care. A good washing each and every night, even a couple times a day if needed. Make up must come off each night also.
Sometimes trying to chase down what is causing your eye styes so often, could be like catching a ghost, almost impossible. So the best way, start making these changes (new make up ect..) and see if it makes a difference. You have to start somewhere. Without change nothing will happen.
If by doing these changes and you are still having eye stye problems, time to see a doctor. You may have a staph infection that needs to get under control. Many possibilities, but you have to start and narrow down what could be the cause.
Best of luck, make those changes and get rid of those styes
Hey,
I had 2 or 3 styes when one sty is gone another pops up after 2, 3 days. What should i do?
Plz help…
Umer
Oh boy, that is a lot of styes you have there. Maybe my comment right above you, to “shanzay” may be of some help. It does sound as if you two are in the same boat, dealing with so many styes in a short period of time.
Having such chronic stye issues, I’d beat feet to a doctor asap.
My stye treatments above are for the casual unwelcome stye, that many will get every so often, but for serious stye issues (which you sound to have) a doctors visit would be a smart move.
Please stop letting yourself suffer so much, get better !!!
OHMYGOODNESS.
You are literally a lifesaver. Your blog is fantastic and I love it.
The Guava leaves were such a miracle. And thanks to you, I survived my first day of high school – stye free.
Yes, all summer, no pimples, no styes, no annoying little flaws… BUT on the night before high school, all goes down. I had a blaring pimple on my forehead – gone. Irritating, super swollen stye? Gone, thanks to you!
Thank you so much, Admin. You make my life easier
-Elodie
(The name rhymes with Melody) ;o)
Hey Elodie
Thank you so much…made my day!
Wow…What an awesome complement
So happy it all worked out for you.
Have a great school year!
i have sty on my right upper eyelid, and i have been treating it by putting warm tea bags and steam. my first day of middle school is tomorrow and i really dont want to go to school with it. is there and really fast methods of getting the pus to drain or reduce the swelling?
thanks, Kaylin:)
Hey Kaylin
unfortunately these stye treatment methods are the best that I have to share, though work quite nicely they still need time to be effective.
You had all summer and this stye, decides just before school starts to rear it’s ugly head…..what a bummer
Spend as much time, as many hours as you can applying a warm compress, this will be your best bet, to really reduce the swelling before the school bell rings.
Best of luck and have a great school year!
admin,
thak you for your advice, your blog is very helpful. my stye has made improvement, and thankfully you can barely even notice it now!
thanks again!!!!
Kaylin
Thank you for the kind words, glad to be of some help.
That is wonderful to hear
Just keep up what you are doing, and that eye stye will be gone in no time.
Thanks again!!
Hi,
I have a stye and it was swollen yesterday but I compressed it and the swelling is down. I knew it was a stye because I’ve had them before but I can’t see where the pimple like stye thing is in my eye. I know the general area from the pain, and I can see a tiny dot right by my inner corner, but i don’t know how to tell if it’s getting better or not. Please help !
Hi Alicia
You are doing good by applying the compress. The swelling has gone down, so the compress is doing its job.
As long as the pain/redness/swelling is going away, you are on the right track of getting rid of the stye. Keep on it, and you will be just fine.
I have a stye under my left eye lid. The stye started yesterday around mid day so I looked Google it put a warm cloth on the stye and alos put a teabag on my eye lid for about 10 min. I woke up and my eye got swollen like I got punched but my eye lid is not red or anything and hurts when I blink.
Thank You for any help.
Hi Joe
Sorry to hear about that stye. Ten minutes is a good start, but to be truly effective, apply the compress/ tea bag stye method as many times as possible throughout the day.
Styes are painful little buggers huh? Keep at it, the compresses alone bring much welcome relief. Sounds like you have a painful one. In a day or two your eye will start calming down.
Best of luck Joe!
This is my second stye I have had now. It is not as bad as the ones in some of the comments, but for the first few days it was red and swollen, and I had normal symptoms. I did the mug trick and I also did the tea bag trick. I first got this stye on last Sunday. Now, my eyelid looks almost normal, but on the eyelid where the stye was it looks like it like shrank, I don’t know how to describe it. The swelling seems to have gone down. My eye doesn’t hurt anymore, and I haven’t been rubbing it or touching it. I changed all the sheets and pillow cases on my bed. However, I still see a little pimple under my eyelid. It doesn’t look bad though. Now, I start school Monday, august 27th. Would it be wise to wear some mascara and eyeshadow? Please respond. Thank you! And thanks for the article. It really helped.
Hey Admin
You did all the right stuff fighting your stye. Good move changing sheets and pillow cases. You left nothing unturned, and to be honest not much more could of been done, all bases covered.
I always say to avoid makeup until completely healed, but for a few hours a day, I don’t see the harm. Since your stye is just about healed, you should be good to go. Just remember, to be safe remove the eye makeup asap when you get home.
Good luck and have a great school year
My son – who is almost 3 years old – has a stye on the upper eyelid of his right eye and one on the lower eyelid of the left eye since 3 months. They looked like swollen lumps and some days looked bigger than other days. Last month I took him to his peditrician who confirmed they are styes and prescribed antibiotics. After he finished the antibiotics a big yellow head appeared on the styes and a week later pus was coming out. Then it looked like the styes dried out but a new yellow head appeared and more pus is coming out. Last week he rubbed his eyes and there was 1 small drop of blood coming out of one of the styes. It is very difficult to put compresses on his eyes as it scares him. Not sure if they are healing now or if I should take him to an eye clinic. I am not very keen on the latter as they will probably drain out the pus which means they need to give him general anaesthetics because he is so young and doesn’t sit still for one second. Any advice is welcome!
Hello Jessy
First, I’m sorry to hear the little guy is going through this. As adults, styes are a painful condition to deal with. When kids get them it’s just horrible.
I had to really think about, what to say here. To tell the truth, it’s a tough one, as everything changes because of his age. The stye treatments listed above are not so helpful, due to the fact he is reluctant to allow you to try them.
Would there be a possibility to ease him into using a warm compress, little by little? This may help him get over the fear, understanding it won’t hurt, and nothing to be scared about.
As a parent, you are fearful of what your son may have to go through, such as having the stye drained. This will no doubt be a frightful experience he will have to endure…..but from reading your comment, you are thinking the worst right now. As parents that’s just our nature, thinking the worst, hoping for the best. We all do it.
Being a parent myself with three children, though never having to go through any stye problems with any of them. I can’t say if doctors would recommend such stye draining procedures as an adult would go through.
I’m trying to put myself in your place right now as I type this…..What would I do?
My answer….back to the doctors for another round of “prescribed antibiotics.” Work on using a warm compress, until he becomes use to it. Pay attention to cleaning the face, eyes, nose and hands multiply times a day.
Not sure if you know this or not. Young children rate very high having stye issues. Children are very found of rubbing, picking their nose, then touching the eyes….it’s just what kids do.
I really hope for the very best for your son. Also, I would be interested to hear on the decision you made for addition stye treatments, and how things turned out.
Wishing you the very best…..hang in there little guy, it will get better
K so i had a stye for about 4 days hav been using the hot compress washing my eye and last night used a tea bag twice on one of the hot compresses i noited a puss like discharge i looked in the mirror and noticed that the big white head that was on the stye is no longer there….does this mean i poped it or its healing itself im afriad of an infection…..my eye feels better (less pain and not as swollen but im not sure) can u let me know what your thoughts are please thank you
Hey deo
You did good!
That’s how it should exactly work out. Good for you.
The stye drained the correct way, and now the quick healing process starts. Just keep up with it by keeping it clean, couple more treatments with a hot compress would also do good.
Your go to go! Glad it all worked out for you.
Sweet i have been keepin up on treatment im glad to hear all is well and i noticed that using a tea bag with a high acid level such as a fruit infused tea help relive the pain and swelling very well thanks again for the advice
Deo,
You are very welcome, glad my site was helpful. Thanks for the tip about the “fruit infused tea.” Every little tip shared, gives my visitors something new to try.
Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Have a great day!
I have a question. When I go out, I put makeup on. When I got this stye a few days ago, I realized by using an exuberant amount of mascara on the lashes below the stye made it look like it wasn’t there. I’m afraid that putting makeup: mascara, eyeshadow, etc. might be the wrong way to go. After reading this, though, I have all makeup off and a warm compress on my eye. But, Im starting high school next week and I really don’t want my first impression to a gross one. Is it ok to go down the makeup road again, for the sale of my social life?
Hello Erin
It’s always good practice while trying to heal a stye to be makeup free. Though, if one has to go out in public for whatever reason it may be, using a little makeup to hide the stye for a short time, is fine.
You have a week before school starts, take and use this time wisely. Stop the use of makeup, use one of the stye treatments above. A week is plenty of time to get ride of a stye for most folks.
Worst case, you may still have a little redness of the eye. A little dab of makeup will hide this, and you are good to go.
Best of luck in the new school year
Hi everyone. I’ve had a stye for a week. It is swollen, huge, red, burns, affects my vision. I tried polysporin eye drops, went to the doctor got an ointment, hasn’t helped. I’ve tried hot water and coriander. Salt water, hot compress 10 times a day… NOTHING has helped. I just bought a hot eye mask I can rest on y eyes for the night. I bought baby shampoo, will this help? Please help!!! Thankyou p.s its huge on my upper eyelid.
Hey Kyla
Those eye drops and ointments don’t seem to have a good track record for healing a stye. They do ease the pain and discomfort somewhat.
A week is usually plenty of time for a stye to be completely gone, but for some up to 14 days may be needed. You are doing right by being aggressive with the treatments. You say it’s “huge” so it may be close to the point of draining.
Keep up with the treatments for another few days. If you go past two weeks and no improvement, it may be a good idea to visit a doctor.
Baby shampoo is excellent! Use it daily to clean the eye area, this will help big time. Keeping the eyelid clean is very important.
I hope this stye you have goes away soon without much more problems.
I need help. When I was in first and 5th grade I got a stye and nothing could get rid of them so they had to surgically remove them and there were three in one eye one of the times because there were some underneath my eyes. Well now I have one again and every time I get one it doesn’t go away. So what should I do in my extreme case??
Please help.
Hey Gina
From your comment, I take your styes are a chronic issue. I’m sorry you have to deal with this awful condition at the extreme.
If none of the treatments for stye above have any positive effects for you, I really think the best approach is finding a good doctor, and building an relationship, were each time a stye problems occurs, everything can be documented within medical reports. Same doctor having your stye history, will be beneficial to a solution.
Having the same doctor treating you, knowing your stye history, I would think finding a solution would be that much easier.
Don’t suffer any longer then you have to. Please see your doctor, as your stye problems seem very bad.
I’m wishing you the very best ….
Thanks for the tips. It’s been so long since I’ve had a stye that I had forgotten how to get rid of one. This post helped out a lot.
Thanks again!
Hi Holly
Thank you! Glad my site was helpful.
Appreciate that you took the time to leave a nice comment.
Have a great day!
I have been having relatively consistent problems with my eyes since April (it’s now August). A lot of redness, swelling, itching, and irritation, to the point where I have to be very specific about when and how long I wear my contact lenses (which I need for work, and which are a bit out of date, prescription-wise). A doctor friend of mine prescribed me some anti-inflammatory drops back in April when it was at its absolute worst, and I have used them on and off, but it just fixes the symptoms at the time… two hours in to contact lenses, they’re red and puffy again, and scratchy like mad! Basically, I have been in glasses 70% of the time since April, which isn’t good with my job. I have been thinking that maybe the older prescription is what’s irritating my eyes, but last night while inspecting up close with a mirror and good light, I noticed the upper “water line” had a raised, pus looking bump on it. I have no idea how long it’s been there, maybe the whole time! I recently got health insurance (YAY) and want to go see a doctor about it. But what kind of doctor? A general opthamologist? And would it be better to just go to a consultation, or to get new contacts (which could still be part of the problem)? I need to be very specific about this, because I have a quite minimal income currently, and can’t afford to go to more than maybe two doctor’s appointments every few months…
Anyway. Thanks for your time, and for this informative blog. Fingers crossed that this cheeky little effer goes away soon! It’s been ages… I want my eyes back!!!
Hello Cat
Your comment post was really focused on contact lens problems. This is making me suspect a type of “Lens-Related Eye Infections” could possibly be the problem.
If you had to use a mirror and good light, looking very close to see what may be a stye, looking that hard is just making think it may not be a stye.
You stated “I have no idea how long it’s been there.” If this was a common stye, you would know it. The pain, discomfort would be a tell tail sign.
You did mention redness, itching, swelling, discomfort and pain. These are typical stye related symptoms…..but from your post, it seems you are associating this to contact lens issues.
I think the bigger issue right now is your contact lenses. Finding the solution to all the eye irritation because of these contacts, might be the place to start. Contacts are not for everyone, some people just can’t wear them.
To give you advice of what kind of doctor to see……for a common eye stye, a family doctor is fine. For your contact problem, I would head back to the doctor that prescribed them to you.
You will get your eye back
Just get those contacts checked out.
I just noticed a sore, scratchy feeling on my eyelid, im pretty sure its a stye but its very small, will itt get bigger? Would these methods work for preventing itt getting any bigger?
Hi Raqriver
If it is indeed a eye stye most likely it will continue to grow larger. Yes, these methods can “possibly” prevent stye growth, by way of helping it dissolve back into the body.
Each of our bodies fight these eye aliments differently, so be prepared if the stye does run it’s full course. Plenty of heat to the area, many times a day, via the methods listed above, will help immensely.
I hope it’s not a stye.
I have a trick to get rid of them myself! Get a raw Potato cut the inside of it out, (chop into tiny pieces) put in a paper towel and hold it in your eye and fall asleep with it on there. It sounds crazy but works. Trust me!
I saw a bump on top of my eyelid, not on the eyelash line. It was slightly itchy but didnt bother me much. I did accidently sleep with my contacts on and the next day I woke up with said eyelid completely swollen. It looked like I had been crying all night in one eye. It’s been sore, so I’ve been applying warm compresses 4-5 x a day with a clean wet microwaved for 1 min. washcloth and cooled for 30 seconds. I folded it so that I could unfold the warm parts to apply to my eye when the exposed parts cooled.
My impatience made me press on the eyelid to see if pus needed to be pushed out of somewhere….causing anything….something to happen after a warm compress. Green pus came from inside my eye and I was hoping that I was doing something positive…so I started to press the lid with clean hands with wet paper towel covering my fingers. And a little more came out.
Reading these posts has made me extremely paranoid now for even pressing on it or anything.
No skin was ruptured on the outside and seemingly neither on the inside. Please tell me I didn’t do something wrong!
Hey Impatientnannoyed
If you had to apply a lot of pressure for this stye to erupt and discharge, then it wasn’t ready to do so. I understand not having patience waiting it out, as a stye is not a pleasant ailment at all.
You say, no skin ruptured, good. Although, micro lesions would be hard to see, and possibly pose a problem….but hey, you did it and it’s over, so lets go from there.
Stop doing any kind of squeezing, picking, ect… Keep applying a heated compress to the stye. Gently wipe away any discharge. In addition clean the eyelid and whole eye area a few times a day. To do this, use a mild cleaner such as baby shampoo, pat dry gently with a soft clean towel.
You will be fine, don’t worry
Thank you! And I decided after I write this I wouldn’t do anything but a warm compress until you wrote back. The stye hasn’t gone away, yet. But I had an optometrist look at it today and he gave me some wipes to clean the lash line and rinse with water after. He suggested using a q-tip to roll on the lid to direct the pus toward the bump until its ready. This is so gross, sore and ugly. Hopefully it will be over soon, it’s been 2 weeks. Thank you for writing back!!
Hi, about 2 nights ago I was rubbing my eye because I thought something was in it. I realized that my eye was bothering me in the morning and quickly became puffy and I knew when I saw the white pimple on the top of my eye below the lash, there was a stye. I have gotten a stye twice before, so I wasn’t too worried. I did a lot of heat compression last night and today I went to the doctors to get a prescription for the eye drops. I just got home and did a quick heat compression and the white pimple disappeared and the puffiness looked much better. Do you think it will take less than a couple days to heal? The doctor said 7-10 days but my eye looks much better than it was an hour ago.
Hello Leila
Good on you with being so aggressive with heat compressions, that’s the way to do it, to get the most out of this simple, yet very effective eye stye treatment.
The doctor said 7-10 days, this amount of time is the standard answer many doctors will give. It is a good amount of timeframe to ensure healing across a wide pool of different human bodies, as each of us will heal slightly different then the next person, time wise.
It can be very possible your healing time will be much shorter, especially after reading how well the hot compress have worked for you. Just to be safe, even if the stye looks like it is gone, do a few more treatments using the compress.
I think you are good to go, and a fast stye healing time is on your side
Thank you for posting, good luck, and have a great day!
My stye came to a head and seems to be draining. Is it safe to try to clear away the stuff that had formed the head?
Other question: is sweating bad for styes? Its very hot where I live and any exercise causes intense sweating that drips into my eye. Early on in this stye I exercised and it irritated my eye, but will it hurt the healing process?
Hi LP
If it’s draining and you can wipe clean without breaking the skin in anyway, then go for it. Just use a clean soft cloth in doing so, afterwards gentle clean the whole eye area.
Good question….Sweating can be the cause of a stye, but a stye that already is formed, the most it will do is cause some harmless irritation. Doing a good cleaning treatment after your exercising is recommended and you will be good to go!!
Have a great day!
Okay so… I forgot how long I’ve had this Style, but it’s really bothering me. The bottom of my eyelid is pink and puffy, and today when I looked in the mirror it seemed to grow bigger.
I have a machine (When I had asthma)that blows hot steam in your face, should I use it at night? Would it be good for me? Cause I do not want to try anything that will only make things worse. I have school August 8th, and I do not want to go to school looking like my eye got attacked by a zombie. (:
Hi Nelly
I know you said you “forgot” how long you have this eye stye, but longer then a week, two weeks, even longer?
I start to suspect anything that resembles a stye that has been there for a long time to be something more.
That machine you have, I’m not so sure how effective it will be. I would think the steam would dissipate before doing any good. Using a hot compress or something similar will do great at containing the heat and warmth to the area, really pinpointing at the stye.
I might be concerned of what the steam may do to the eyeball in way of irritation. Something to think about there.
Jeez…Do not go back to school looking like a Zombie
. You mess up that eyeball someone will mistake you for a “walker” for sure…
Pop and Clean, Pop and Clean!
Joey
Pop and clean, Pop and Clean!…..That’s a lot of popping and cleaning going on there….like living in a fishbowl, around and round. Might be be better to let the body do its work and just be done with it.
So…
you say it’s a very bad idea to pop a stye due to the bacteria possibly causing infection, yet all the treatments offered have the goal/result of the stye eventually popping.
Hmm, wouldn’t it be easier to just say, “Pop it and clean it!”?!?!
Hey Joey
It sure is a bad idea to pop a stye. The reason behind this is, popping a stye forcefully, the chance of causing trauma to the surrounding skin is highly probable. Trauma such as small skin lacerations, this then become a doorway for the infection to re-enter the body and bloodstream.
Letting the stye fill and drain on its own is the way our bodies do this in a safe way. A draining stye on its own is safe and a normal body function. Yes, it is still nasty bacteria that is being drained, but open lacerations that are nonexistent, the chances of spreading is then prevented.
It is important for fast healing not to poke, squeeze, rub the stye, but to comfortable apply heat to speed the process up, via any of the methods above. Once it drains on its own, it can be safely cleaned, washed without the worries of broken skin to carry on with another bout of an eye infection.
It would be very easy to say “Pop it and clean it!”?!?!.” Although this would be very bad and harmful advice to tell my visitors.
If you could point me to any reputable medical reports giving such ill advice, I surly be interested in reading about it.
Thanks for your comment!
I have had this stye for a few days now and it’s really starting to bother me like crazy! I’ve been using the hot compress every night but nothing seems to be happening other then the stye getting bigger and more painful. It’s like slowly closing my eye to look half the size of what it’s supposed to be. It’s about just a hair smaller of what the size of a pea is and I really don’t want to go out knowing I’m going to be asked about my eye, people thinking it’s gross and abnormal when that’s not the case. I don’t know what to do. Maybe use the hot compress more often or something? I was thinking about the hard boiled egg trick so maybe that’ll help? I don’t want this to last long… Please help!
Hey Elizabeth
Oh boy, sounds like you are having a miserable time with this eye stye, sorry for the pain you are in….but lets see if we can ease things up for you.
First thing that stood out in your comment….”using the compress at night,” good, but to be really effective multiple times throughout the day. Be aggressive with this stye treatment. Doing it only once or so a day will get you nowhere.
Getting heat, a steady heat flow to the stye is the goal. This will help it to come to a head and drain. The egg method does work very well, producing soothing heat for quite a while. I think you may be surprised, just how long the egg heat will last. Just be very careful, right out of boiling water the egg is gonna be extremely hot. I found that wrapping it in a paper towel for the first few minutes worked great.
Another tip for you….Do you have a heating pad? If so, set it on a low warm temp and hold this to the stye, over a clean compress of course. Works well..
Don’t you let any comments from anyone bug you….usually with people like that…what comes around, goes around.
Get heat, constant heat to that stye, and you will get rid of it fast.
Best of luck Elizabeth
I have a stye in my right eye and this is day 1 I want to get rid of it before it gets worse! Any tips or ideas??! I need help!
P.s sorry if anything is misspelled
Hey lexx
I have all kinds of helpful stye treatments listed above. The easiest would be a plain hot compress held to the eye multiple time during the day.
Your stye will tend to go in one of two directions during applying a compress. It may not get any larger and dissolve back into your body or by using the compress it will become larger and drain.
So give the hot compress a try.
Spelling? heck I have to be the worst
Best of luck to you!
Thanks for the reply!! It got bigger and has been that way for 5 or so hours! So maybe that’s a good sign!;)
Lexx
You are very welcome!
The stye will continue to get larger to a point then burst, so it looks like it’s heading in that direction. This is fine, as this is what a hot compress to a stye is intended to do.
Once it drains, it will heal quite fast, and hopefully you’ll never have to deal with a eye stye again.
Thanks for taking the time to post your comments
i get these annoying, painful little things all too often, but i have never had one where the head of it is showing. they are always just on the rim of my eye in the lashes, right now i have one in the inner corner of my eye, and the head is so far inside the lid you can barely see it when i pull the lid down (its on the bottom lid near the tear duct.) thanks for all the tips, ill have to try the egg one some time, but of course i seem to be out of eggs at the moment.
Hi Carrie
Yes, styes love the eyelid area just at the lash line. There are two types of styes, the outer and inner. Seems you do have an inner one, plus these styes tend to be more painful
Just keep applying heat to it, and it will drain. You could even use a heating pad held to your eye for constant warm heat. My wife swears by this method, and I really need to add it, to the above tips.
Eggs don’t last too long in my house either, but it’s a wonderful method for long lasting heat.
Hope your eye heals soon
Wow. Nice article…I’ve been suffering from an eye stye for abt two weeks. I got to now about the stye only a few days back. I live in a hostel, So i’m only trying that warm water compressing technique. For each session, it does seem to get smaller and smaller.. I hope this works.. Please drop in your suggestions too
Hey Wayne
Thank you!
Keep up with the warm compress as you see it is working, do it as often as you can. Try a tea bag also, apply it just like the compress, make sure to soak it first in warm water.
Few other things to keep in mind….being in a hostel, keep your personal care items, especially any item you are using to treat the stye, such as the compress very guarded. Meaning, using a shared bathroom, be cautious of any cloth you may use for a compress or where you may place it.
Pay attention to cleanliness and keep up with the compress treatments, you will be fine
I’m not sure if what I have is a stye, but I’ve been dealing with it for over a week now. I’ve been prescribed 3 different antibiotics and none of them are taking. What do I do now? 2 ER visits and an Eye doctor visit later and it’s worse than when it started. Even seems like its spreading to the other eye.
Hello Tye
This is a tough question Tye, three different antibiotics and none have helped? Wow, wonder what the heck is going on with you here, antibiotics will or least should out do all the stye treatment remedies listed above.
All the doctors confirmed it is a stye?
It has been over a week…..this is not so abnormal, eye styes can last a week or more before healing.
You say it is worst then when it started…. This is normal too, It will seem to get worst as it runs its course, until ready to heal.
Try to keep the eye area as clean as possible, be cautious of rubbing the infected eye , then touching the other. The possibility of spreading is there.
Try applying a warm compress, or anyone of the tips above. You have to do these as often as you can throughout the day, so be aggressive. Onetime heated compress will do you no good, keep on it!
A combination of antibiotics and these stye treatment methods should be very powerful.
Hoping the best for you Tye ….
I have had styes in the past. I was given loads of different eye drops at first then eye gel as it stays in the eye for longer than the drops. None of this worked and eventually they had to operate to remove them. So it is worth persuing it at the doctors whist still trying to use compresses to get heat to the stye in hope of it healing itself.
Wow! What a great site and I love how you write back to people. I got a dumb stye and trying the tea method and hot water compression. To keep the washcloth warm I wet it and put it in the microwave for 15 sec and it keeps it hotter. Of course make sure your microwave isn’t dirty lol.
I’m going to try to find some eyewash stuff at the drugstore. A passenger told me about it. It’s a simple cup that you rinse your eye out. I’ll do it in the tub so I don’t get all wet lol. Do u recommend this?
I’m a flight attendant and haven’t worn my eye makeup for the past two days, need to let it breath. Oh and I’m not wearing my eye mask to bed. I wash that twice a week btw
Hey there Shelly
I’m happy you enjoyed visiting my stye site
Thank you for the kind words.
Haha a dirty microwave, you know some of them do resemble a science experiment, don’t they?
I know exactly the eye wash cup you speak of, they even kinda look like an eye socket that fits the eye perfectly. These are found in many work places as an emergency eyewash device in case of accidents too. They are great to wash an eye out, but the area you want to pay attention to, is the eyelid itself. You want to be able to wash and clean the lid and folds, this is better done by hand, using a soft clean washcloth and a mild baby shampoo. I don’t believe the eyewash cup can do better job, but that is just my thoughts on it.
Good that you are taking a break from using eye make up, also you may want to consider tossing it, if you believe it might be contaminated from use while using it during the stye outbreak.
Anything that you have used on your eyes while the stye was present….is a good idea to clean throughly, so you are right on about keeping the eye mask clean.
Keep up with the compress it will do you good!
Have a great day Shelly and thank you for commenting
i got great news! my mom finally got me a doctor’s appointment next week, i’m so glad. hopefully something can be done quickly, lately it either itches or stings really badly. so if i have to deal with it for a while longer, it doesn’t matter to me, as long as there is a solution. ^-^
Hello Kai
Wonderful news
I’m so happy for you. Your eye troubles are just about over. Do stop back and let me know the outcome, as I am very interested as what exactly the doctor’s answer is…stye or chalazion or something completely different.
Way to go Kai !!!!
My eye was getting red and swollen, and I noticed it would hurt when I’d blink. But I didn’t think it was a stye, until today. I touched my eye by the bottom lashes and felt a bump, then I touched my other eye and felt nothing. So I checked my eye in the mirror an noticed a small bump on my inner eye (it looked like a pimple). Thank god for google! I found this website and tried the tea method, with chamomile tea. The pimple-like thing or stye has gone away, but it still hurts when I link. Any tips?
Hey Melissa
Good, I’m glad the tea method work out for you. Also, the mention of “chamomile tea” reminds me to add this to the above tips, which I keep forgetting to do….Thanks
If it is still hurting, keep up with the tea stye treatment. The pimple like feature my be gone, but not completely healed under the skin, which is causing the tenderness.
You are just about there completely getting rid of the eye stye, so keep up with the treatment.
Best of luck to you!
I always get styes, I believe it’s from my make up so I pretty much do this to myself. But this time it’s horrible..I’ve never had one that is this swollen and puffy, half my eye is closed because of it. Im definitely going to try some of the things you have posted. I always just did a warm compress an it would take the selling down, it has takin it down some so far but this is by far the worst stye I’ve had.
What are good ways to wash my eyes at night? I do have a make up remover but should I do more seeing as I have a history with getting styes? I want to prevent getting these anymore!!
Hey Alicia
Your suspicion of make up is spot on, it would be a wise move to dump the old stuff and buy new.
It does sound like you have a major eye stye going on, sorry to hear of it. You are doing right by applying the hot compress, so keep it up.
Cleanliness plays a big role in stye care, helping the healing process ( along with trashing contaminated make up
) …. Try this each night after removing all make up. Wash the eye area with gentle baby shampoo, this makes for an excellent eyewash. It’s gentle and will not burn and cleans wonderfully.
You say you have a history of stye problems, starting a better eye care hygiene is where to start. If this fails and you still are having problems, maybe a doctors visit is needed to see if there are any problems you may not be aware of.
Trash that old contaminated make up, and up your eye washing each night.
Good luck Alicia and I hope one of these stye treatments work out for you.
Hi Alicia,
I get styes all the time. It is very important to throw away the contaminated make up, eyeshadows, mascara, eye liner, etc once your stye is gone to prevent from getting more. To speed up the healing process try not to wear make up on your eyes and the hot warm compresses are the best and quickest way to get it. If its re-occuring you may need antibiotics through your physician. Good Luck!
I have a stye in my right eye I do not see no pimple but I have tried your tips but nothing is working is there anything else I can do. By the way this is day number 2 with this crazy stye.
Hey Misty
First, I have to ask… sure it’s a stye? not just a pimple? Has it become any larger, as though filling with pus in the past 2 days?
Are you having pain, discomfort along with it being swollen? These are typical symptoms associated with styes.
I’m asking cause not every small bump is in fact a stye.
Now if it is a stye, it’s only been two days and each of our bodies do react differently. Keep up with a very warm compress, if you are not seeing a change, then it may be time to suspect it could be something else.
I have to agree, when it comes to styes…two days is long enough…
It’s no pimple there is pain, swelling, bright red color and very warm when touching my eyelid. I have had styes before but this one is the worse.
Misty
Thank you for clearing that up, indeed it does sound like a stye. Try doing this, put a twist on the stye treatment….use the cup trick and stick in a tea bag at the same time. After using the mug, make a compress out of the tea bag.
The main goal is to apply these treatments as often as you can for best results. For some folks it work quit quickly, for others it may take longer and in the worst case not work at all.
I hope one of these stye treatments does the trick for you
Hi! I have had a stye for about 2 days now and it’s so ANNOYING! But, just today my eyelid started hurting everytime I look down or to the right. (The stye is on the inside corner of my left eye.) Also, my vision is blurred in those areas. Is this normal? And thanks for all the tips!
I hope they help this annoying little stye heal..
Hi Emily
I hear you, they are such annoying little buggers to have.
What you are experiencing are classic text book eye stye symptoms, you may even find bright light to also cause a bit of discomfort.
You are welcome for the tips, try one out…..
I hope your stye goes away quickly
Hi! I recently went on a trip to Lebanon and while there, I either got a bug bite or rubbed my eyes with dirty hands, and either way, I got a stye. After a few day of placing tea bags, then got full of puss. So I went to the doctor & right there in the pharmacy, he drained the puss out with a needle. Then he gave me meds & eye drops & told me to finish them. So now I’m back home, with a stye still on my eye. And another bump under my eyelid, like right above the stye. What I’m asking is, a little less than a month ago I got this stye and has decreased in size but just wont go away! What should I do? P.S. I’m going to try the mug & egg remedies tomorrow.
Hey manon
I’m a little confused, is this eye stye the same one from your trip to Lebanon? or a new one?
If this stye is the one which was drained by a needle, there is the possibility that it has not fully healed yet. Where the puss formed, actually caused a small pocket between the layers of eyelid skin. This area may need more time to fully heal and then there is always a chance of scar tissue.
Does this stye seem to be filled with any puss or is it just lose empty skin?
You tried the tea bag and it helped, by bring the stye to a full blown head to drain. You may want to apply this method again as it work for you in the past. Maybe combine the mug and tea bag method together.
I hope you get rid of your stye quickly, remember apply which ever stye treatment method as often as you can for best results.
Yes this stye is the same one. For the past couple of days I haven’t put anything on it because putting a hot cloth or tea don’t seem to be working as much anymore. But the stye still has two little pockets filled with puss. Even when I apply a hot cloth, it won’t drain.
manon
There may be the possibility that the stye itself has healed an not producing anymore pus, since it has not become any bigger, but….what you are now left with is a bit of remains. Meaning a bit of pus that is still trapped between your layers of skin on the eyelid.
Our bodies can dissolve this overtime, but how long will this take? That I can not answer. An example…. like having a pimple that never comes to a head, but goes away over time, the body did it’s job dissolving it on it’s own.
You could wait it out some and see what happens, or better yet check in with a doctor to see if it should be removed. Which should be quick and painless.
Keep us up to date….
Best of luck to you!!!
This is my third time getting a stye and it’s really starting to annoy me. Is there any way to permanently get rid of it? I’ve always been told that a stye is caused by an in-grown eyelash and that’s how the bacteria gets in. so I figured if I just found the eyelash and picked it, all would be better. Would it actually help?
Also, I use wheat grass and juice it and use the pulp as a compress and it works wonders. Just thought I’d let you know
Hi Jane
Each time you get a stye, I assume it does go away, but eventually returns. If this is correct, then more focus on why it comes back and what can be done to stop the stye from recurring.
This could be as simple as better eyelid care, which involves complete removal of eye make up and a thorough cleaning each and every night.
Normally a stye is the results from blocked glands within the eyelid, the infection targets the edge or inside area of the eyelid, producing a painful lump.
Plucking a in-grown eyelash that is causing problems to the eye might be beneficial, especially if it’s growing under the lid or causing eyeball irritation.
What to do?
If there is an wild eyelash hair causing you problems, plucking can be considered. Then pay more attention as, I stated above on make up removal and cleaning. See if this stops the stye from recurring. You have to try and experiment a little with eyelid care for prevention.
Thanks for the wheat grass tip, I’ll look into it more, might be something I can add to the methods above. I alway appreciate tips that work
Best of luck Jane, thank you for posting….
Hey, I think I have 2 styes on one eye and I have no idea what to do.
Hello Victoria
Did you happen to read above, I listed multiple methods and ideas to help get rid of a stye. Just pick one and give it a try.
Hi
I got a stye the other day snd decided to try something and it worked!
I have a Keurig so I made a cup of hot water and i poured it into a platic cup. I put a tea bsg in there too. I used the “mug method” and let the steam of the hot water hit my eye, and stye of course! Then several minutes later I raised the bottom of my cup and prssed it against my stye using my cup as heat compress. Then several more minutes later i took the tea bag out and pressed it on my stye. Got creative(: but it made my stye smaller and not as red.
Hey kortni
Wow, way to go! You took the mug method and actually devised a way to turn it into additional methods listed. Kinda like a swiss army knife, everything packed into one. We have to give this one a name…..The kortni stye special
Great thinking kortni ! Thank you for the great tip.
P.S. Wonderful that your eye stye is on its way to healing.
I’ve been dealing with styes for the past 9 months. My first two are gone finally with some scars you can somewhat see. But the last two are still there. One is 2 months old and doesnt bug me, but the newest is over a week old, the stye is huge and looks like a black head under my skin, when i pull my eyelid down you can see the pus filled stye. I’ve used the towl compress, washing my eye and medicines from 2 different doctors. My eye doctor suggested Flaxseed oil and to while i’m showering allow the hot water to run over my eyelids, these worked in reducing the size of my styes and removing the old ones. But with this new one I’m not sure what to do!
Emily
Boy, you have an stye battle going on for sure, sorry to hear this…
Smart move on seeking a doctors advice. My advice is here and listed above, but it should never trump any medical advice your doctor is recommending. I would continue doing as advised from your doctor, but if nothing is going well, then a follow up visit might be in order. Let him/her re-examine your stye, they might have a different approach this time to heal you up.
Have a great day Emily
My girlfriend just got a stye this morning so I came to find some remedies. I’ll try them out tomorrow morning.
I have a question, I had a stye form a couple years ago but it never hurt at all. It’s still in my eye but all it’s done is reduced in size and has just stayed there. It’s not visible but I can feel it on the underside of my right eye lid. I have irregular sleeping patterns and I wear soft eye contacts (have been for around 5 years). Any idea on what it is? I’m thinking of going to an eye doctor once I get enough money and find one I can trust.
Hey Jeff
Sorry to hear about your girlfriends stye, hopefully these methods will do some good for her.
Your question is an interesting one….I have been doing more research on eyelid bumps that can be mistake for a stye. Just so many folks have left comments on styes that last for many months, I suspect these may not be the common “eye stye” after all. In the very near future, I will release my findings in new published articles.
One ailment that comes to mind in regards to your underside eyelid is “Pyogenic Granuloma” which boils down to excess healing tissue left over from trauma. This trauma could of been from a past stye.
As, I said there are many different eyelid growths and the possibilities could be numerous, here are a few other examples…
–> Inclusion cyst
–> Intradermal Nevus
–> Sweat gland cyst
I think it is really a good idea to visit a doctor for an in office exam. Find out what exactly it is, while giving you a peace of mind.
Thank you for taking the time to post here.
I have two styes on my right eye. I’m using the washcloth technique and they’re going down slowly (fine by me). My question is have you ever heard of TWO styes appearing so suddenly on one eye? (one stye appeared the first day, second day the other one showed)
Adam
Oh yes, the possibility of more then one stye can happen. This can occur from simply rubbing your eyes during the first onset of the initial stye, with not so clean fingers. There is also the possibility your immune system was in question at the time, giving the perfect opportunity for more then one eye stye to develop. Putting a finger on the exact cause of a double stye is difficult, with a lot of variables mixed in.
I’m glad the compress is working out for you, continue applying, but also pay attention to cleanliness of the eye area, while trying to avoid touching with dirty hands an fingers. Use a clean compress often too.
Hope this helped some…..best of luck with those styes !!
I have had a lump on the inside of my eye for two nd every time i move it or close my eye it rubs my eyeball and hurts…my eye is really red too whaat do i do
Hi adam
Those inner styes are painful as you are finding out. Eye styes are bad enough but having one underneath the eyelid is just awful, the rubbing on the eyeball is so irritating.
These methods will help for either type stye, you may find the hot compress the easiest to apply and welcome relief. Though the possibility of this stye getting very large and causing you too much pain may warrant a visit to see a doctor.
So start with one of these methods asap and see how it goes, hopefully they will do the trick for you.
Best of luck!!
Can styles appear underneath the eyelid? Like underneath the eyelid but right next to your eyelashes? Because I think I’ve have one and the stye just appeared when I woke up this morning. If yes, then do I just apply heat on top of my eyelid? Or do I have to like get the heat to be on the stye?
Hey Michelle
When a stye appears underneath the eyelid, it’s call “internal hordeolum” (medical term). Hordeolum is just a fancy term for “eye stye”, that us regular folks commonly use.
The internal hordeolum tends to be somewhat more painful also. Great huh?
You are correct by applying the heat to the top of your eyelid. Eyelids are very thin, so heating the underneath with a warm compress is the way to go.
I hope your stye goes away quickly, and I hope it’s not too painful as they say, the under the lid ones tend to be.
Good luck Michelle
I think i have found a good way to get rid of the stye, but i’m not very sure if it will work so please give me some feedback.Well first you get ramennoodles in a cup and put them in the microwave for about 4 minutes then when your done just let the steam flow on top of the surface of your eye.And i’m only twelve is it wierd for me to have this?
Hey Doni
That is thinking outside the box
Great thinkers change the world…..
My concern here, potential burn from such a hot liquid. I have that soup here in the house myself, and I know it can be extremely hot and easily cause a bad burn if spilled on yourself. Please be very careful, have your parents supervise.
Heat is great for a stye, but I’m talking mild heat, nothing so hot that will cause more damage to the eye…it can be easy to over do things and in doing so can cause even more harm.
So you be careful and ask your parents before experimenting just to be safe….ok
The methods, I mention are safe, you just might be better off using a warm compress…..Think before you act.
Best of luck and thanks for taking the time to comment.
I understand that the heat could possibly damage it more, but what if i’m from a specific distant from the cup?
Doni
I understand what you are saying here…..I’m just worried about a big cup of extremely hot soup tipping over and causing a burn, the potential is there…..with that being said….
I’m not sure how effective this will be, what is the proper height? How much of the steam will dissipate before it does any good? Too many variables that come into play, which would be a job in itself to accomplish to get everything just right. Plus these methods work best when applied many time throughout the day……that would be a lot of soup to eat
The method listed above using a cup, allows one to place the eye safely on the rim to really concentrate the soothing heat/steam to the area of the stye, being more efficient then trying to capture rising steam off hot soup.
Hope this helps some…
Yes it did!:) Thank you for the reply
Doni
You are welcome! Thanks for visiting….
Have a great day
Hello again!
So I left one comment before about there being a tiny ball in my eyelid. Well, the bump has completely gone down, HOWEVER my whole entire eyelid in swollen and puffy. I don’t know whats wrong, I just woke up one morning and it was like that! I can’t go out in public because its so terrible looking.. PLEASE help!!!
keeley
So the bump, if it was a stye has completely healed, correct? That is good, but now you have something else going on…..is it a new stye forming? Any signs of it being a stye?
If it is not a new stye, maybe possibly pink eye?? If it is pink eye, or you are not sure treat it as if it is. I’m saying this cause pink eye is very contagious.
Other possibilities, could be the eye is just irritated by allergies, maybe a pet hair…..It is just so hard to say, what it could be from a general description, that it could be anything from a stye to just common eye irritation.
Use a compress on it and wait to see what develops…..hopefully it goes away asap.
Yes, I am pretty sure it’s not pink eye. But i’ve been using hot compresses and teabags, and I’m not sure if they are working? I just really want it to go away before I go to Florida this weekend with my friends. Thanks
Hi keeley
Good it is not pink eye
The good news you have a week to nurse your eye back to health. If you are healthy, a week should be plenty of time to get healed up.
My advice….apply these methods as often as possible, even mix them up some. Meaning try the mug treatment, instead of plain water make a tea, use the tea bag as a compress. In between use a plain warm/hot compress as much as you can. Whatever you do, be aggressive with multiple applications.
Lastly if this stye turns out to be stubborn, a quick trip to a clinic for a prescription would be a good idea. Lets hope you don’t have to go to a doctor, but it’s an option to be considered.
I hope it’s gone before your trip and enjoy Florida
What cause a stye in your eye
Hey popeye
Basically it’s a blocked oil gland on the eyelid. This can result from many things such as make up, dirt and grime and so on. Stress is another big cause too. Having good eyelid hygiene will go a long way to help prevent eye styes.
Thank you for your question
What about if the stye is just starting to surface, with no pus in it yet? Would these remedies work as well?
X
Nicloe
That is a very good question, but comes with no definite answer. The outcome can go one of two ways. Stop the stye from going full blown, or help it to rapidly develop and heal quickly.
No two bodies will react to eye stye the same, so I can not give you a positive answer that you seek. Though applying these methods asap will be very beneficial.
Best of luck and I’m hopping you do indeed get rid of it quickly
Hi, i’ve had my stye for the past 2 days, i just really need the swelling to go down in the next couple of hours. does the gold ring actually work? i have tried the tea bag and mug thing. whats the best treatment to get the swelling down?
Hello Grace
I put no faith into the “Gold Ring” tale, you could Google it, but I can tell you no website worth its salt will recommend such nonsense.
Start applying a warm/hot compress to the stye, as many times as possible throughout the day. This should help bring down the swelling.
i have gotten a stye about 2 days ago , i tried this remedy with getting hot water and salt and pouring it in my eye then for a few minutes placing a penny on where the stye was , it did indeed take the pain and swelling but this morning i got upset with the fact tht it was there so i started too pop it and pus was coming out but minutes later when i looked in the mirror it was just more red and swollen then when i started. so i came too find remedies , i wished i would’ve saw your warning first, but i think i’ll try these remedies. i’ll see how it goes:) wish me luck ! i need it !!!
Hi Bobbi
Interesting remedy you have there, never heard of salt and penny as a stye treatment. Where did you learn of this method? It’s best not to bust open a stye by popping it, as you found out. Nice warm/hot compress should get you feeling much better.
Good luck, let us know how things turn out for you….
well my stye is going away but now since i popped it there is another one forming and moving down too my eye lid. but i’ll know how to handle it now. thanks for your remedies
Bobbi
Just don’t try popping anymore. Good, I’m glad you are going to try these stye remedies. Which ever one you try, just make sure you apply it as many times as possible throughout the day.
Best of luck to you Bobbi
Woke up with a stye the other day, got annoyed and popped it, it was gone by the next morning, stupid idea but it was my first one and I didn’t know what to do.
It worked though
Hey Mike
Best of all you didn’t lose an eye…… <—just kidding, haha
Popping a stye is not recommended, but hey…..you did it, you lived and your eye stye is gone
Thanks for your post Mike….have a great day!
Hello- I have had a stye on my eye for 3 months. I finally went to the optrometrist this week becuase I had two more appear. I had tried many at home remedies and none seemed to work. I use the compresses daily and have a steamer. My doctor prescribed me 3 different kinds of medicines yesterday in hopes that my eyes will clear up. I will write back to inform you!
Hello alexandria
Thanks for sharing this information with us
Three months and two more now, I’m sorry to hear such news. I am glad to hear you did go see a doctor about your stye problem, smart move….
It would be appreciated if you could share, what types of meds the doctor prescribed and how it all worked out for you.
I hope those eye styes go away fast for you…..best of luck!!
I just got a stye yesterday and it sure is painful… Its not the first time i’ve gotten one. I looked online to see if its better to use cold or hot compress and hot it was. I used green tea bags because i didnt have chamomile that people are suggesting. It did really work for me so i tried the hot mug steam and i had to keep replacing the water of course.
Then i saw my moms heating pad and took it from her and i placed a tissue over the heating pad (so i wont place the dirty pad itself on my eye) and lightly used it as a heat compress and the swelling went down after a few minutes.
Hi Cathy
Thank you for your comment
Oh yeah, those little buggers are painful huh? Yes, heat is the way to go for an eye stye. I’m glad at least you gave those treatment a try. It all comes down to how often it’s applied and how bad the stye is…..
The heating pad is another great method, and a great source of constant heat. It’s my wife’s goto method when she had her dealing with a stye…she swears by it.
Good luck and get rid of that stye!
Hi:)
I’ve had a problem with styes before. At the beginning of this year, I had a HUGE stye that wouldn’t go away, so I had to get surgery to get it removed! The surgery was very painful and I don’t want it to happen again. Anyway, I have another one and its been here for a month or two. Its smaller than my other one though! It doesn’t hurt, and all it is is a little ball inside my eyelid. However I don’t want it to be noticed anymore! Is there any techniques I can try?
(PS- I’ve used ice, hot washcloths, and teabags. they don’t seem to work but maybe I just haven’t used them long enough?)
Thank you!
Hello keeley klein
Stye surgery is painful? I have no experience with this type surgery, and didn’t think it would be a painful process, now I know otherwise.
Is this new stye in the same location as the one that needed surgery? I’m just hoping for you, that this won’t be a common thing (surgery) each time you get an eye stye.
One application of any of the methods most likely will not be enough to see improvement, so yes, try multiple times for longer periods.
I really hope you don’t have to go through that surgery again…..so keep trying
I had a stye removed surgically as well, and yes.. it is very painful! They have to numb you eyelid with a shot (OUCH) and then separate your eyelid in 2 and scrape out the build-up. NOT.FUN.
Hello Laci
Boy, that stye surgery does sound painful. They actually separated your eyelid into two? Wow…. Did this eyelid separation do any harm to your eyelashes?
How long did you have this stye before surgery was needed? Do you get many styes?
Thanks for posting your comment
I have a problem with a stye that I’ve had for over a year. I’ve done the boiled egg and mug trick, but it just won’t go away. It doesn’t hurt, it just bothers me to have a little growth in the corner of my eye. My boyfriend has brought it up a couple of times, so I decided I wanted to get rid of it. I don’t know what to do. I have tried to pop it, which wasn’t smart, but it was my last resort and that hurt like a s.o.b. so I didn’t. It’s just been sitting there and looking at me through the mirror. Please help!
Hello Mackenzie
Wow, over a year dealing with an eye stye? Here are my concerns….Have you been to a doctor? Confirm that it is indeed a stye? I’m asking this because not every growth, bump on or around the eye will in fact be a stye. Normally an eye stye will / should go away on its own in a week or two. A year seems very abnormal if it is just a common stye.
You tried to pop it and it hurt that bad, nothing came out of it? A stye is filled with pus, resulting from bacteria ect.
Could this be a skin tag? Possibly an abnormal skin growth in the eye area?
Anything condition lasting so long, might be a good idea to check with a doctor. This way you can confirm it is an eye stye, while ruling out anything else that it could be.
Chamomile tea compresses work really well. Chamomile is an anti inflammatory, mild and can be used easily even if your skin is sensitive. And if you have an essential oil you can just put a little in hot water and use for compresses.
Hey Lucia
“Chamomile tea” that’s it! For the life of me I couldn’t remember the name, as another poster wanted to know the best tea to use for an eye stye….so thank you.
Thank you for the tip. I’m gonna have to update my post and add it…:)
Hi
I’m John and i’ve been suffering with “styes” for 2 yrs now. My optomologists says I have Blepharitis. It’s when the glands get blocked with oil and gets infected. There are many reasons for this he said it could be the glands where the hair follicle grow simply stops functioning properly. Also. Could be a food allergy. Even the suns rays could cause this so he recommended alwas wear sunglasses. My regimine is always to use baby shampoo and hot compress every morning to prevent it. I still get them once a month though. Teabags work but all this takes time. It sucks because i never used to have this but it’s something I’ve. Learned to live with.
Hi John
Welcome and thank you for taking the time to post. Your post is packed with some great info. I had no idea styes could form because of possible food allergies or the sun’s rays.
Learn something new everyday
Hi,
Not sure if anybody else has mentioned this, but gold works really well on getting rid of styes. I used to get 3-4 a year as a kid and my Mum would lightly rub her wedding ring on it for a few minutes, 3 times a day. Hey presto, within 2 days it was gone.
Hope this helps.
Hi Jase
Old tales never die. For the life of me, I can not find any credible source to confirm this.
This actually does work. It takes a couple days. But it really works.
I’ve used a gold ring before too, & it did work! Much quicker than tea bags, heat compress & baby shampoo did, for me at least!
Hi Jamie,
Could you elaborate more on “Much Quicker” …..did you rub it like one time and the stye was gone? Tell us what and how it works. I’m very interested to learn. Why do you think, this gold method is never listed on any medical sites for a stye in eye cure?
I had recently gotten a stye, two days ago about. I wasn’t sure what it was but it really hurt just as I was about to fall asleep. The next morning when I woke up it was pretty bad and I saw a little pimple-y bump there. I tried one of the tricks about the mug and the steam and it helped the pain go away.
Thank you! This site really helped me know what was going on with my stye.
Hello Jacqueline
Thank you for the kind words. I’m happy my site was of some assistance to you. The mug trick has helped many folks, I’m glad it worked for you too.
Have a great day!
WHat type of tea bag or does it matter
Hi Maggie,
To be honest, I don’t really think it matters, but a few folks did mention a certain kind/brand in the comments way down below….I just can’t remember the name, I think it started with a “C.” Tea is tea if you know what I mean
I usually get a really bad stye once or twice a year. I was wondering what specific things make the stye appear, and what I can do to avoid getting them. I very rarely wear eye makeup so I’m pretty sure I’m not getting them from that. I just think its weird that all of my friends and family wear mascara and eye liner almost everyday, and they never get styes, but I barely ever wear any eye makeup and I’m always the one to get styes. what should I do to avoid getting them?
Hiya sb
Great questions! Trying to figure out “how or why” one has developed a stye in the eye, can be like chasing a ghost……sometimes the best answer “it happens.”
But….
Sharing makeup is a big “No, No” so if you are guilty of this, stop! Passing a staph infection in this manner, those with a weaker immune system will be the unlucky ones ending up with a stye. Even might be a good idea to every once in a while trash old makeup for fresh.
Stress is a big culprit too. College students have the highest rate of eye stye problems. All due to lack of sleep and stressing over their studies.
You may need to practice better eyelid hygiene…..not saying you don’t…just that you may have to do a little more.
Then there is just common sicknesses we get, that brings down our immune system, leaving an opening for a nasty stye…..
There is just so many ways one could end up with a stye and putting a finger on it, especially if it only happens once, maybe twice a year….could just about be impossible to narrow down. Like I said “just happens at times.”
Thank for taking the time to post, nice to have you here….:)
This is my second stye. I was wondering if I should multi task by boiling water than putting the tea bag in to and use the tea bag method and after use the steam/mug method after.
Hi Elisabeth
Very good idea! I like it
There is no reason not to mix up and add a twist to these methods.
Great tip….thank you
Hi, m back again with a stye.
I don’t know, why in every month styes come.
Do my eyes have some problem… please suggest.
Hey Renu
Welcome back!
It’s nice to have you back, unfortunately your visit comes with a price..another “stye in eye” problem.
Do your eyes have a problem? Thats a good question and comes with a complicated answer(s).
Now I’m just speculating here with my answer…..as there could be any numerous reasons of why…
On going staph infection in your body or eyelid that triggers the onset of a stye each month could be a possible answer. If this is the reason, a trip to see a doctor for antibiotics is in order. Then more attention to daily cleaning of the eyelid each night should be practice.
As I said, there could be so many reasons as to why, but what I said above is a good start to…. what should be checked out.
Hope this helps some
Hey Admin!!!!
This time hot water technq is not working…
what shuld I do.. Please suggest.
Hi Renu
If nothing is working and you have been applying these methods multiple times throughout the day. My next advice… is time to see your doctor. Might not be a stye and would be wise to have a doc check it out. Styes on their own should be gone in just a little over a week. How long has this stye been lasting?
Around 9 days!!!!
so i think ive had this stye for around a week and a half already this started around finals so the cause might be stress. first i started to feel some irritation and my whole upper eyelid swelled and the next day got even worse and for a few days my eyelid was swollen and i had some crust when waking up. now for the past three or four days this has turned into a pretty good round ball under my eyelid however doesnt hurt very much and my whole eyelid isnt swollen like before. its been around two weeks so shouldnt this have healed by its own?? im starting to be confused on whether or not i even have a stye?
Hello Dun
Oh yeah, stress will do it. At first as I was reading your comment, “pinkeye” came to mind, but you do in fact have a bump under the eyelid….so a stye most likely.
Styes under the eyelid are called “Internal Hordeolum” fancy name, but still a stye. It should heal on its own in about a week and all the treatments listed above should help it along.
The best advice I can give….a stye / internal hordeolum that is lasting longer then a week, one should consider seeing a doctor. You are now into the second week, so you may want to think about it, if none of the treatments are working.
Then again is it a stye? From your description, it sounds so…but without seeing hard to be 100%.
Best of luck and I hope it gone soon
I had I saw I lid Friday arvo I rember at soccer I was elbowed in the eye so we thought it was a black eye but I woke up on staturday and I was in alot of pain Sunday morning I woke up at 4:45 and I cAnt open my eye wat can I do to make it go down before school photos
Hi Amy
Sounds like you had a heck of a soccer game, hope your team won
To me, it does sound like you have a bruised eye and not a stye, if I’m understanding correctly from your comment. I read your other comment about using boiling water below. If this is a bruised eye, you will be better off using an ice pack of some sorts. Frozen bag of peas works great.
If it is a stye, yes using a warm/hot compress works, be careful using boiling water though….it may be way too hot and you don’t want to scold your eye.
Be careful and best of luck to you…
I just noticed an annoyance in my eye this afternoon. I thought nothing of it for a while until I looked at it in a mirror. Their is a tiny dot under my eye lashes and I was wondering what you recommend as the best option to get rid of it. It’s my first stye and I think I know why I got it, partly because I’m stressed over finals at school, and partly because my mom gave me some of her masscera to use the other day. Thanks for any help ypu can give.
Hello Kai
Two of the leading causes of a stye, stress and sharing makeup. If I had to guess though, I bet it’s the stress that got to you.
Since it’s only a dot at this time, going with an easy method of a hot compress would be the best. Hopefully being so small it may not even be a stye, possible something else???
If it is a stye, it should continue to become larger and if so, the hot compress is gonna be your friend….use it
Thanks a lot
Kai
You are welcome
Hope your eye stye is gone soon..
The chemist man said to me put boiling water in a hot cloth and press it on your eye
I’ve had a stye for over 2 weeks and it doesn’t seem to be improving with compress. how long can this take to go down as i’ve had to get one before drained by a doctor and would like to avoid that process.
Hello bry
Two weeks and no improvement? Two weeks should be plenty of enough time for an eye stye to heal on its own. Are you positive it is indeed a stye?
It all comes down to applying heat for long periods of time, this works best to encourage the stye to drain on its own. The mug method has worked for many who have tried, maybe it would work better for your situation.
I’m hoping a doctors visit is not needed each time you have a stye in eye, but it could be so…..bummer indeed.
Best of luck and keep trying….
I just recently got a stye yesterday and have been treating it with tea bags since. But I work as a bather in a grooming salon and very often come home with loads of dog hair and such in my eye. I believe this may be the cause. I wash them out as soon as I get home. I was wonderin if you had any ideas as to how I can prevent it from getting worse while at work. They do not allow and eye protection such as goggles or anything. So m stumped on what to do. Any suggestions?
Hi Jackie
What a great question. I took a day to think about it before giving an answer. I must admit, I’m stumped, can’t think of anyway to protect the eyes without some kind of safety eye protection.
You may want to try and wash your eyes out multiple times per day while at work. A fast rinse may do the job.
Maybe some others will jump in and give some suggestions.
I’m sorry not to be much help on this one, but great question all the same
How about you just wear eye glasses? dont have to be prescription but they’ll offer some protection that goggles would offer.
My stye is going bigger and smaller and i can’t even get to a walk in clinic because no one will drive me. _ _||| but i’ll keep trying these remedies. Anyway, Do you have any bed-time suggestions? I try to leave my stye alone during the day to let it heal on its own and i try to put on a compress before i get in bed, but the compress is already cooled by the time i’m almost asleep. any suggestions?
Hi Kai
How long have you had this stye now? Been awhile hasn’t it? If I remember correctly. This is my concern, why is this eye stye taking so long to go away and heal? Even if one does nothing to treat their stye, it will go away within a week or two on its own. You have been suffering with this stye for quite awhile now.
You have to keep trying to visit a doctor. Keep trying!
Ok, I have another method that I didn’t list yet. The compress is great, but its downfall as you have notice it cools fast, so one has to be re-heating and re-applying often. Not good for bed time healing, but…..
If you visit a drugstore, there you can find small personal non-electric heating pads. These pads produce heat, once activated by squeezing the pad itself. The heat from these small pads last for hours and can get quite warm.
The way to comfortably use this, wrap the pad in a moist washcloth and press against the eye stye.
Great for bed time application and long lasting heat.
ok ^^ thx!
ok so my stye is going down REALLY SLOWLY and i want it to go down a little faster. the most it goes down is about the size of a pin each day, do you have any suggestions?
Hey Kai
Hahaha…..I’m confused to which Kai is which now, not even sure if this comment was directed to me or the other Kai
Anyway I’ll have a go at it…..This is my feelings, take what you can. If it (stye) is going down, great! Keep doing whatever you have been doing, and be patient. If you get to antsy now and do something to irritate it, you just might be starting all over again.
I know, you want the eye stye gone fast, like yesterday, but be cautious as it is going away, although not as fast as you would like…you are making progress.
I have to ask……sure it is a stye to begin with?
to tell the truth i’m not sure exactly, somedays it swells up big, other days its small.
Hey Kai
I had a feeling you were the original “kai” ….
It is so hard to tell, just from your comments if it is truly a stye. I wish I could see it. Is it on the eyelid line? Where your eyelashes are growing? Under the eyelid? On the eyelid?
I’m puzzled and have a feeling this is not a stye, but what can it be?
Its on my bottom eyelid on my left eye. its on the eyelid line on the outside. and its weird because my eyelashes are growing where the stye is, and lately it hasn’t done anything. it has grown, or shrunk its the same size. i tried using compresses and basically everything on this page but its not helping. i’m not really sure what to do…
Okay, so now its slowly going down again. I made sure I had plenty of sleep and it went down dramatically the past couple of days. Do you think I should keep using the eye treatments on here?
Hey Kai
I’m sorry to hear you stuck and can’t make it to a clinic, but don’t give up keep trying…
For bedtime, how about trying to wrap a compress so it stays in place on your eye. Maybe soaking the compress in tea, don’t worry if it cools, just let the tea do its work.
i tried what you told me but nothing has worked…now its been the same size for 3 days…idk what else to do…i hope someone can get to the doctor soon, its really depressing me, i’ve had this stye for 6 months now…
Hi Kai,
This is not the news I wanted to hear….. 6 months with a stye is awful, but what is worrisome, you have not seen a doctor to even confirm it is indeed a stye. Somehow Kai you need to get to a doctor and have your eye checked out. Six months, why too long if it’s a common stye. I stand by my advice, Please find a way to the clinic and have it checked by a doctor..
My mom has been going through cancer treatments, and lost the feeling in her feet so she had to stop driving but she should be back to driving soon. and i don’t have my license to drive yet, so i have no one to drive me around. and there isn’t any public transportation where i live, so there’s no way i could get to a doctor, we even tried the emergency room, but they took way too long to get to me so we left. i’ll just keep trying to find a doctor, i just want to get rid of this stye so badly, styes are annoying
Hi Kai
I’m so sorry to hear this news about your mom, I wish her the very best.
I wish somehow there was a way to get you to the doctors, I really do, cause all these months with a stye is just not right.
What about friends? Anyone that could help you out? There just has to be a way….
i wish my mom would trust me riding with my friends, but she’s scared that they are not experienced enough and might cause an accident.
Hey Kai,
What about other family close by? Maybe if you talk with your mom and explain about the stye, how long you have had it, and how bothersome it has been, she just might understand……but on the other hand, I do understand a parents concern on a child’s safety and mom always know best….
still haven’t gotten to a doctor yet, my mom thinks i’m on my laptop too much so she took it away for a while, but nothing has worked…
Kai,
Listen to mom, you may need a break from starring at the laptop, but don’t stop trying to get to the doctors.
I have to check my laptop once a day for my college stuff, so it’s not really easy to stay away. The stye is still here, i took a picture of it. look in the website tab.

Hello Kai,
We seemed to run out of comment room for your thread, so I had to jump in here to alert you of this. You will need to start a fresh comment thread next time, as we can only go back and fourth ten times, before replies shut off.
Kai, I don’t believe you are dealing with a stye, it looks more like a “Chalazion” from that photo. These are sometimes mistaken for a stye.
You now have had this for a very long time, and this is quit common. I hate to inform you, but it could be months for a Chalazion to completely heal without any medical care. The possibility to have it drained by a doctor is an option, if the doctor feels that is best. Some doctors would rather see it heal on its own, because of scare tissue that can result from the surgery.
Until you can seek professional medical advice (I hope soon) continue with warm compresses, also massage it ever so gentle, this may help your body to reabsorb and heal. I know you have been using the compress, but now you also know it can take months for it to go away so a few application will do nothing.
I wish you had a way to see a doctor, I feel so bad you have to, and have been dealing with this for so long. If I’m correct and it is a Chalazion, not a stye, you will have a long road ahead of you before it heals. The fact that it has gone on so long already, kinda confirms this….
hey just a teenager here with a date in a few days who go t a stye and the guayaba leaf (or as in English guava leaf) treatment worked well. I simply got a paper towel (like bounty or charmin’ or whatever brand) and soaked the towel in HOT water. (as hot as i could take) Afterwards i put the guayaba leaf on my compress, then grabbed a shoelace and made an eye patch so i could still do stuffs and BAM! i check not even a minute later after my patch got cold, and the swelling in my eye had decreased by at least 50%. Thanks to this simple and amazing remedy.
thanks guys
also the pain is almost relieved completely
GOD bless
last words, my stye was on the inside of my eyelid… all of the styes i’ve had have been on the inside. im telling you this remedy works. (for me at least)
Hello Antonio Ramirez
You are the first person to leave a comment about using Guava leaves to get rid of a stye. You even improvised a makeshift eye patch too….way to go!
I’m happy it worked for you
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I hope your stye pain goes away quickly.
Thanks I’m going to try the tea one!
Hey Samantha
Ok, good for you and “Good Luck” Hope you get rid of a stye fast!
Styes are also commen if you have HSV 1
Hi Tami
Thank you for commenting.
Are you saying there is a connection between styes and HSV1?
When I seen your comment, I thought “really, this is interesting” so I started doing an Internet search, but coming up empty on any kind of connection between the two. Could you point me to a source, for more information?
ill try it! i sure hope it works!
Hi, I got my first stye last Sunday, inside of my eyelid. Its on the inner part of my right eye, almost at the top waterline, but not quite. At first it was very painful, it felt kind of like a bruise, then it started swelling the next day until the pain was unbearable. I talked to my doctor and we confirmed that it was in fact a stye. She also told me not to pop it. However, now the stye isn’t painful or swollen, but when I lift it it’s still there. I wouldn’t know unless i look at it or when i touch my eyelid and feel it. What can I do to get rid of it?
Hello Flora
I’m sorry you have this horrible stye pain. Inside the eyelids seem to be reported as the most painful of all areas to have a stye. Good on you for talking with a doctor, now that you know for sure it is an eye stye, time to do something about it. Please listen to the doctor and don’t try and pop it.
If I were you, I would start with the hot compress, it’s the simplest out of all the methods. What you want to accomplish is heating the stye, doing so, multiple times throughout the day. This should also bring on some needed relief from pain.
Then go right into the cup method, try to be aggressive with these tips. It may take some work on your part, but it will be worth it.
I hope everything works out, and you get rid of a that stye quickly.
What happens when you pop it?!
Hi Taylor
Basically by popping a stye, you are causing trauma to the area, which is not ready to drain naturally on it’s own. The possibility of spreading the infection and or causing a longer healing time.
yea, people are saying i have got a stye, and i really have no idea what to do about it…im like 14, and its not normal for me at all, im in pain all the time and sometimes its too swollen to open my eye, i just need a quick easy way of getting rid of it, please help me:(!…i cant wear make-up either by the way…
Hello Natalie
Are these people who are telling you it’s a stye, adults or friends? What I’m trying to get at, are you getting good advice, to what exactly is your eye issue and that it is a stye? Parents? Are your parents aware of this problem? If not, Please show them what is going on with your eye. I’m just saying all of this cause, I don’t know what your situation is……
Seeing the school nurse is another option to think about.
I think in your case the easiest would be using a warm/hot compress, as often as you can. This method works very well, makes the eye area feel much better and will move the healing process along very quickly.
But my best advice to you…..seek help from parents or another trusted adult.
I hope your eye stye goes away soon
Hey, the other day while i was at school i went to rub my eye and the eye hurt, i wasn’t sure what was wrong this has never happened before, but i didn’t think anything big was wrong. Well before I went to school today I put make-up on just thinking my eye had a little redness.(Is that bad to where make-up on a possible stye?) Well while i was at school I showed my friend and she told me the bump was a PIMPLE! i just couldn’t believe there would be a pimple on my eye. Well I came home and all i know is my eye is red and looks like a bump but you cant really feel the bump, also it hurts when i blink, and touch my eye. Do you think this could be a stye? Another question do you think i should go to the doctor right away or use these method’s first. And would antibiotics work for this to go away?
Hi miastaffinie
From your description, it does sound as if you have a stye. Maybe pinkeye also, so hard to say for sure without seeing. Either way going to a doctor is always advisable and a smart choice. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics depending on the severity, or he may just advise you to apply a hot compress to the stye.
I would start applying a hot compress asap, until you decide if a visit to see the doctor is in order. The hot compress or any of the stye in eye tips here may work faster then you think. Saving you that trip to the doctors.
If you can go without makeup for a couple days until your eye heals all the better. If not wear it when only needed, take it off when you can. It’s a much better practice to keep the eye area as clean as possible until healed, though a little makeup isn’t gonna be a big deal.
Hoping you the best…
Hello, i woke up this morning and my eyelid was hurting I didn’t realize anything was wrong Untill about half-way through work, I went to the bathroom and look and there was this thing, I think it’s a style but I’m not sure, It is behind the line of my eye-lashes but still visible from a mirror. It’s not very red but has a decent sized white head on it. Is that a normal stye?
Hello Taylor
It’s hard to say for sure (100%), I mean without actually seeing. Though from your description it does sound like you have yourself a stye.
ok so my styes came back and they really itchy. i haven’t scratched them, so what should i do? i don’t have a doctor either >.<'
Hey Kai,
What the heck is going on with you and these stye in eye problems lately? I think it might be time to give your lifestyle a good look.
Have you been over stressed? School, work or just plain life? Stress is a leading cause of styes.
What about makeup, have you been sharing any eye makeup with anyone? Another big no no….Might be a good idea to clean out your old eye makeup for fresh. Don’t share!
Might have to spend more time cleaning your eyes each and every night. All makeup needs to come off and a good eyewash nightly will help.
If you are acceptable to recurring stye in eye issues, it will come down to paying close attention to eye care daily.
I would use any of the methods above that have worked for you in the past. Apply and get rid of the styes you have now. Then start really paying more attention to preventative care each and every day.
I hope you get this under control, hate to hear of your suffering with this eye condition.
P.S. Even if you don’t have a regular doctor, there are always walk in type clinics available if needed.
i’m trying to keep up with my grades in school cuz its my senior year, cuz i’m passing all my classes except one, i think thats why it came back
Welcome back Kai
There you go, I bet the stress and all the hard work keeping your grades up is causing your stye problem. Stress is a leading factor as to why most do end up with stye in eye issues. Do you know styes are a college students most common eye aliment, all because of stress….
Good luck with those grades
Can you plaease help me to get rid of this stye i get one every year, but last year i had a stye for four months and had to get surgery but it came came back. And know ive had it for a week i tried the hard boiled egg trick but it did not work, and i dont wanna get another surgery any advice?
Hi Kenny
Anyone of these methods that you try, you have to remember..”multiple times”. Meaning one application, no matter which one you pick will never be enough to get results. Heat to the stye is what you are trying to achieve and for long amounts of time works best.
I hate to hear that you suffer so long once you get a stye. Some reason you may have a healing time much longer then the average person. This means more work on your part, by multiple and longer applications mentioned above.
The bad news is and I’m sorry to say, none of these methods may not work for you. If you needed surgery in the past to rid yourself of a stye….it could be a possibility each time, surgery will be needed (I hope not).
May I ask, did your doctor give you a reason to why, eye styes are common for you?
Im going tommorow to the doctor but now it looks like im gonna have another stye on my right eye
but thank you so much im gonna keep on trying the methods but thank you this website is very helpful but i hate the fact that i get a stye every year thank you so much
Hi Kenny
Welcome back….Good, I’m glad you are not messing around and seeking medical help. Another eye stye now? Oh man, sorry to hear this run of bad luck with these styes. You doing the right thing…going to a doctor. I wish I could be of more help to you. Until you do get to the doctors, keep applying these methods, even if it’s just for relief.
I hope you stop back and let me know how you made out after seeing the doctor. You might have some interesting information to share.
Best of luck Kenny
I’ve had a chalazion for several months. I went to the eye doctors and everything and am now having surgery in 2 weeks. All of the sudden my stye hurts, has gotten closer to my lash line and is coming to a head. I don’t know if it’s possible for it to be a stye or not it but it really hurts and is getting large fast! Don’t know what’s happening but I’m freakin out!
Jen
Do you currently have both a chalazion and a stye? I’m a little confused as you used both terms. If it is a stye and coming to a head, this is good. Applying a warm compress will help to expel the discharge.
If this is the chalazion that needs surgery, and it’s getting larger, it might be best to give your doctor a call He/she will be able to advise you over the phone, being familiar with the problem, as you are a patient.
I hope everything goes ok for you.
I have had a stye under my lower left eyelid since christmas
If you touch the lower eyelid you can feel the lump underneath the skin.. went to the doctors about it and she said the best way was to apply a hot cloth to it as often as possible. I’ve been doing that as often as I can but I don’t think I’m doing it enough. Goin to give the mug trick a go as it seems to be a handy and simple way of getting the heat on it!
Hello Lia
Since Christmas? Wow, way too long, lets see if we can get rid of that stye…
You went to the doctors, so you know for certain it is a stye, good. I must say though, having a stye for such a long period of time, puzzles me. I mean it’s an common aliment and for the most part should heal on it’s own without doing anything within a week or so. There have been many that left comments, having the same issue. A stye lasting for an extraordinary length of time. I need to do some research on this issue, for the reason why.
Yes, often as possible is correct. I try to remind folks that as much as I can. This is when too much, happens to be a good thing.
Hope you get rid of that stye and soon
Hi! The stye has went away but when I woke up this morning my lower eyelid (where the stye was) is swollen. It doesn’t feel sore, is it possible for the stye to come back? Would the putting heat on it work again?
Ty for the reply
Hey lia
That’s is wonderful your stye went away, good for you
You didn’t mention if your eyelid swelled right after the stye healed, or if this is something new…..anyway lets hope it’s not another stye. Yes, use the heat or whatever method that worked for you.
Another thing make sure you clean your hands before and after touching the area, and the eye itself….so don’t forget to clean the eye and keep it clean in between any of the methods you are using. Very important to up the cleanliness, it will help a lot.
Good luck lia
lastnight i got a stye and it really hurts i am so glad i found this website because i was going to pop it. i am excited to get home so i can do one of these tricks for my eye and relieve some pain… can styes make you have headache?
Hello lexxi
Oh yeah, styes can be painful at times. I would caution you about trying to pop it. Just remember pick one of the methods to get rid of an eye stye and apply as often as you can. These methods work great, but you won’t see any improvement with just one application.
I imagine if the eye stye pain is really bothering you, it might cause a headache. I think it might be you stressing about the stye, causing the headache. Just try to relax, it will be fine.
Good luck and thanks for stopping by
I noticed a stye developing on my eyelid about a week or so ago. I thought it would be gone in few days and I did nothing. One day a woke up with a really large stye, and to be frank I panicked. I thought going to the doctor was inevitable, and I really try avoiding doctors as much as I can. I decided to try home-treating it first and I found this site.
And I must admit the Mug trick really worked. I also used a tea bag, and I also think that camomile tea is the best option and many people told me to use camomile tea. I really found the information on this blog helpful, so thank you for that. It’s really refreshing to find a place where you can really find useful information, given in laymen’s terms. I’d like to add that the chloramphenicol cream also helps. I recommend it strongly, it relieves you from the pain and it protects your eye from the bacteria that’s gathered in the stye. Here, in Macedonia, it is very cheap and it can be found in any pharmacy, I don’t know about elsewhere, but I doubt that it would be expensive. The stye started discharging after only a day of treatment and it’s very small now, I think it’d be totally gone in a day or two, so thanks again!
Also, I’d like to share old wife’s tale or two concerning styes, since I’ve heard quite a few from older people in my country. First, it is believed that a stye would appear on your eye if you have been given an angry look by a pregnant woman. Secondly, it is believed that the stye would disappear if you wink at a girl that’s wearing red. Another solution is having a woman who’s breastfeeding spray a few drops of milk into your eye.
Hello Viktor
Wow great post, I enjoyed reading what you had to say. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
The mug trick is awesome huh? Most that have tried it are pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I’m glad it worked for you. Stopped that trip to the doctors for you also. I’m with you on that notion, less doctor visits the better, stay healthy..
Second time this week that camomile tea was brought up for healing a stye. I plan on looking into this more and hopefully if it’s worth the time to do a post on it. Maybe just add it to this post here on the next update.
Also, I really appreciate the kind words about my stye blog. My goal was to try and do something different then all the other sites on “eye styes” out there. I wanted my site to be user friendly, and deliver quality information mixed with a little personality and easy to read. I still have lots of work to do on it, but it’s coming along nicely. Kinda wish it was a blog that folks would come back to read multiple times, for most folks it will be a one time thing. Oh well….
I like those old tales that you shared too. If you have more, please share… would love to hear
Next time I get a stye (hope never) have to find lady to spray some milk in my eye…lol.
Thanks again Viktor! Have a great day!
Had to comment on something here; first, great site. My husband has a style and we’re trying out the mug/tea treatment right now. Second, the breastmilk comment someone made, this is not a wives tale. Breastmilk has some great properties including being antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. It’s actually really good for pink eye, ear infections, styes, or even acne…have used it for all these things!
Hello Jessica
Thank you for the kind words about my stye blog. It is still early in its development stage, hoping to turn it into something very useful for folks.
Thank you for enlightening me on breast milk, to be honest I didn’t realized how powerful its properties are for certain aliments. I will look into this more closely and if I can find enough data….it will make for a great post.
Thank you
A new trick that I just found (didn’t have any of the other stuff on location) I put ice on it to reduce swelling and it def. Helped with the pain. Can’t wait to get home and use your methods! This thing is kicking my butt!
Hey warpig
I think ice does have it’s place, though it’s the heat that brings the stye to drain. Placing ice on it afterwards would be great, to then bring done the swelling. Great tip!
That stye is kicking butt, though your kung-fu is much stronger…. now that you read my blog.
I just found out my younger brother has had a stye for almost a month now (he lives far away) so I found this site, and I’ve been madly texting him all these helpful hints! I am a nurse and didn’t even know half this stuff! But then, I’ve apparently been blessed not to have a stye so far… knock on wood… Thanks!
Hi Prilly
and you are a nurse….how cool is that?
Having a stye just for a few days is bad enough, but a month… ouch!
I’m honored that my blog is your go to “stye in eye” information center point
I hope your brother gets rid of that stye fast….
Thank you for taking the time to comment.
My daughter gets stye 2 or 3 times a year… this year has been worse with this being about the 4th so far, i use the medicine for her but lately it has not been helping and she’s complaining she can not see when medicine on, I have tryed gold in the past but have not worked….. I would like to try the tea bag on her… but what kind of tea bag do you use?>? there are like 100 at the market??
Hiya Li$$a
Boy, I’m sorry to hear that your daughter has to deal with a stye in eye, so many times throughout the year.
Yeah, those goopy (sp?) suave type ointments tend to make seeing a real choir at times.
Just pick any type of tea, I believe it’s the tea’s flavor that sets them apart. The basic ingredient is tea, so any teabag should do the trick.
Best of luck to your daughter
I think I heard that Chamomile tea is best but I’m sure any tea would work. I am currently trying this treatment right now for a rather painful stye that is trying to emerge. I am praying that it works!! Thanks for the helpful site!!
Hey Bee
Never heard of Chamomile tea, but will make a note to look into it.
Sorry to hear you are in pain, just remember multiply application is going to work the best for you.
Hope your eye stye is gone soon…
Just wanna tell that this is extremely helpful, Thanks for taking your time to write this.
Hey trish
Thank you! I’m glad my blog was of some helpful service to you.
i luv this site! my stye is gone! thanks for all the helpful tips! ^_^
Hello Kai,
). Glad to be of service.
Thank you! Enjoyed having you here and hope to hear from you again (without a stye of course
Have a great day!
Hello Dee
Sorry to hear about your stye. Makes you want to crawl back under the covers, hoping it’s just a bad dream.
Keep up with the treatments, you’ll feel better. If the stye ointment works, great!
Wishing you the best and a speedy stye recovery
this horrible stye greeted me Saturday morning… eye in the mug trick helps to soothe the pain… still swollen and my eye is still red. is that normal? anyway, I’ve been using over the counter stye ointment on my eye to lessens the crusting that happens overnight.
Thanks for the tips!
Im not sure that my infection is a stye tho.its on the top lid and its swollen and red and just sore when I blink…and a little sensitive to light which makes my eye watery, and it has a white head in the center…no other pain like you described
Hey Megan
You are back!
If it’s not a eye stye or too early to tell for sure, maybe it could be pink eye. Whichever it may be, you will benefit from applying anyone of the above methods to ease the pain.
I hope it’s neither a stye or pink eye, best of luck to ya!
Just what I was looking for…simple and down to the point! Not to mention all the other sites give scientific explanations that are pointless to read cause I don’t understand them
Hiya Megan
Well thank you very much for that kind comment
Many sites/blogs tend to go off on a more, as you say “scientific explanations” and you know why? Cause they are copying each other, without thinking about the needs of the reader. I feel that simple and to the point while thinking about, what my visitors would get the most out of…is the way to go.
it was the same stye but it got smaller again, i changed the time i used the Vaseline. now i use it once in the morning when i wake up, then i use warm compresses all day, then i put it on again before i go to bed.
Hello Kai,
Crazy, it just doesn’t want to go away
Best I can say, keep up with the warm/hot compresses. If it doesn’t go away soon, might be best to have a doctor give it a look. Just to make sure you are dealing with a common stye and not something more.
Good luck!
Hey Kai,
What the heck happened? Hold on now, you did touch it. You decided to try Vaseline on it, a tip from your mom.
Is this a new stye or the same one?
Get rid of the Vaseline, clean your eye as best you can with mild soap and water. Start applying a hot compress to the eye stye, as often as you can for the day.
Hope this helps
Hello Renu,
Glad you like the tips
Both eyes have styes? Wow, one stye is bad enough, but two….just plain horrible.
You have time, this is a good thing. I would pick one of the above stye eye remedies and start applying asap. Stop wasting time thinking about it, just do it.
That’s my faster relief suggestion.
Hats off!!!!
This website is amazing….
I was having 3 styes, and because of warm water method,I got rid off this bloody styes in just 2 days…..
Once again Thank you !!!!
Nice tips!!!!
But, what will you recommend for faster relief…
As I am having styes on my both eyes and in the next week I have to attend family function…
Please suggest..as soon as possible….
thank you so much! this is my second/third stye and its spread to my entire upper eyelid, im going to try all of these this time instead of the washcloth one, thanks for the tips so much!!
Hello Erica
You are gonna try them all? You ain’t messing around are you? Don’t give up on the hot washcloth, just has to be applied properly.
You are most welcome! What a bummer…having a eye stye put a damper on the upcoming weekend
Let us know, how you make out and what method worked the best for you.
Best of luck
Thanks to all for the DIY tips…especially steamy cup’o water. I arrived at your site looking for help with chalazion…and hope that these lose-the-sty-methods will have similar effect on these other kind of darn eye lumps/bumps. And, thanks for your humor and kindness in response to folks who post…it’s encouraging!
Hey there Smilin’
I like that. DIY tips for healing styes, might want to use that as my next post headline
Oh, the cup of water has been a very popular method to try out. Pretty nifty idea huh? Got to give thanks to Samantha for letting us in on it. Boy, I wonder if she has ever came back to visit….she might be surprised how popular her tip has become.
Now that chalazion you’re hosting there
should benefit from these methods also. Much of what I have researched, the same home care methods as above should help out.
Thank you for leaving such a nice comment and taking the time to read my blog. Stop back and let us know how you made out.
Have a great day!!
Update!!!! I got the idea from my mom
Last night i went to a party and had makeup on. my stye was a little big but i didn’t care. when i got home i took my makeup off and my mom told me to use vaseline. the stye is almost gone now because of the vaseline!
Kai,
Sounds as if you had a good time at the party, I’m glad you didn’t let the eye stye stop you from enjoying yourself.
Moms always have the answer
and thanks for the tip…
I’ll look more into using Vaseline to help get rid of a stye.
e,
Nice, I was waiting for this comment….knew someone would drink from the cup….
I’ll let you in on a secret….I didn’t drink the water, but I did eat the hard boil egg afterwards
i drank the hot mug water after
it tasted weird.
Hello Kori-Lynn
Thank you for the kind words, I’m glad you liked my site
I think you waking up with the stye eye even more swollen is just the natural progression of the infection going on. By cleaning the makeup off your eyes, I don’t believe you have made it worse (you may want to get some fresh eye makeup.) No need to be nervous about trying these methods, they will help out a lot and applying one of them is better then doing nothing at all.
The hot compress is a good choice, but remember it needs to be done as often as you can through out the day. This is a time where more is better
Passing a stye on to another can happen though not as easy as one would think, not like a common cold…So, I believe you will be safe going to the party without any worries of making your brother sick.
Good luck and have fun at the party!
This is an amazing site!
But, here’s my dilemma… I’ve had a stye growing for the past three days, and today’s the fourth. I was a dumb dumb last night after going to the movies, and when I was wiping my make-up off, my stye(on the bottom, inner corner of my eye) discharged. I know you said not to allow that, and now I’m nervous to see if any of these methods work. I had put warm cloths on my eye, and I woke up with the stye more swollen.
What in your opinion would be the better way to get it to go down? Same things, or something else?
Besides, my younger brother’s birthday party, and I don’t don’t want to give him the stye… When are styes no longer contageous?
Thank you very much!
~Kori-Lynn
Carly
Congrats on your first stye…Your gonna enjoy it. Oh and watch out, boiling water, you’ll just end up cooking your eyeball.
Just messing with ya….
Thanks for stopping by and good luck with that stye!
So I noticed yesterday that my inner lower eyelid was sore and a little puffy. We think that it might be the beginning of my first stye
I’m gonna try the boiling water thing, that seems like it worked for a lot of people… I’m not sure if I really have a stye cuz I looked up pics and mine looks nothing like those– then again I might have a minor one or the start of one. Anyway, thanks for all the tips!!!! Now if you’ll excuse me, I must execute my stye…. muahahaha! (ok that was a little creepy sorry lol)
one more question!!!(update from previous) ok, so now the really bad eye went down a lot but its a small white dot and it hasnt drained at all. i’m not able to go to the doctor, do you think i should keep using the methods u gave?
Hey Kai,
The bad eye with the stye has gone down. This is good news, the method you are using is working, so don’t stop. Give it more time. BTW which method did you use?
lol i mostly used the warm compress and letting heal itself some days
Hey Sammy jay,
First thing that came to mind….Do you have a pic of yourself wearing this contraption? I would absolutely love to show it off to the stye community
I have to hand it to ya, totally thinking outside the box there….I love it.
One method i have. Okay so i had my first stye just the other day. I was searching everything on how to get rid of one. Then i just thought of this. Get a pair of swimming goggles. Fill the side that you would put on your infected eye with warm water so theres no air or seldom air. Then put on your eye until the water gets cold
Hello Jenny
Keep up with using the washcloth compress, it’s doing more good to the eye stye then you think. Remember these methods need to be applied as many times throughout the day as possible.
Wishing you Luck!!
I’ve had a stye for 5+ months, went to the eye dr. and got antibiotics which didn’t work. Now they want to do surgery to remove the stye. I really want to avoid surgery, is there anything else to try?
Hey Chris
Boy, 5+ months dealing with a stye….I’d be like “can I have that surgery today?.” Seriously, if that is what your doctor recommends, I would very much be all for it. If after 5 months and nothing else has helped, it has to be the best option for you. Have the surgery and be done with it, imagine free from your eye stye after all those months…
Best of luck to you….
Chris dont fret the surgery. i suffer from styes literally every time i get stressed out. a couple years ago when i got married and bought my house i was so stressed out that i had 3 styes at the same time (2 in my right eye and 1 in my left). one would not go away and turned into a hard ball in the bottom of my eyelid, surgery was the only option. very simple operation, completly awake and short time. all be it uncomfortable the surgery was not painful. as to everyone else thanks for the mug trick this was the first time i have heard of it and will try it tonight as i am suffering from another right now.
So I woke up yesterday with a painful stye and I tried the washcloth trick and nothing so I think in going to try the mug method instead, wish me luck!
Hey Josh f
Along with those drops, I would apply heat to the stye by any of the above methods. Heat does wonders to help the healing process along.
Best of luck…
Ok so I went to the doctors today because I got an internal stye in my eye lid and she gave me drops but what else can I do?
Hi! Wow, first, I want to say this is a very informative site! And I’m thankful that you are still responding to comments!
I woke up yesterday (Wednesday) and the inside of my eyelid was very red and a little swollen.. Today it seems to be worst, more swollen and red
is this an internal sty?
How long till I should see the white pus head form?
My doctor said he thinks it is a stye.. And prescribed me fucithalmic eye drops.. Do they help?
Thanks again for all the information!!!:)
Hello Jean,
I’m trying to give out as much useful information as possible, striving to give more, where other info sites are lacking. I also try to answer each and every comment, if someone takes the time out of their lives to comment or ask for help….I’ll do my best.
Thank you so much for the kind words
Wow, I’m surprised the doctor didn’t give you more instructions to help alone the healing process. It does sound as an internal stye. The best you can do along with the eye drops, is apply warm heat. Do this as often as you can during the day. It may take a couple of days, but you should see a pretty fast improvement with pain and swelling.
Hope you get rid of that stye fast
I wear contacts and almost never go without eye makeup so I am very prone to styles. These ideas were very helpful. I also get a sock (preferably a new one) and pour regular, uncooked rice into it and tie it so the rice can’t fall out. Put it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds and then let it sit on your eye. This makeshift compress stays warm way longer than a wet towel and feels amazing on an infected eye!!!
Hello Michelle,
Thank you so much for leaving this great tip. The next time I update this post, I will be sure to include this idea. I can see how this would work nicely, the warm rice will conform to the eye socket while providing soothing heat. I like it
i’ve had this sty problem for a month now. the sty got to both of my eyes and the eye where was originally in is almost gone, but the other eye is still swollen and its bothering the heck out of me. like Jordan said, I’m so close to using a needle and popping the thing. i’ve tried everything on this page, you think i should just let my doctor take care of it?
Hi Kai,
Please if you are suffering this badly with styes, in both eyes no less….Please don’t use a needle, popping a stye can lead to more of an infection. I think you should see your doctor asap.
Best of luck to you…

hi my name is sally, and in the last few months i’ve been getting styes very often and my birthday is on 14th march so are any of these remedies quick enough to get rid of the stye?
thank u very much!
Hi Sally,
Happy Birthday!!
Can’t promise your stye will be completely gone, but these methods will have you and your eye on the fast track to recovering faster, then doing nothing at all.
Hi, I’ve been getting styes for the past year& the tea bag method always helped, but now i have 2 internal styes on top eyeli d for 5 months& nothing iswworking. Been to dr. They say use hot compress but no luck. Any suggestions?
Hi APG,
The tea bag is a very popular method, I’m glad it has worked for you in the past. Wow, five months is some time to be suffering with these internal styes. The only thing the doctor offered was to use hot compresses, after 5 months??
Maybe lots of heat for longer amounts of time….give this a try. Hot compress against the stye eye and hold it there by way of a heating pad for longer durations at a time. Adjust the heat to a comfy level.
I wish you the best, if this don’t work, Please try a different doctor.
Thanks for the tips! I really hope this works =)
Hello Myca,
Thanks for stopping by, but sorry you have a stye.
Each method works nicely, so it is your choice. Remember multiple times works best in getting rid of a stye.
Best of luck
Hello J Renee,
Interesting comment, I must say.
So rubbing gold on a stye, and it will go away? Really, how do you suppose this is to be? How’s that working out for you? Old tales live on
I see you have one of those shifting styes
moved from your eyelid to your face….have you tried rubbing it with a gold ring?
Admin – My comments were not meant to be “interesting.” I advised I’d been successful in eradicating the formation of a full-blown sty by rubbing gold on the area before it developed into an actual sty. To answer your questions, “Dr. Phyllis,” that’s how it has “worked out for me” several times over 40+ year span. “How do I suppose this to be ?” , I don’t profess to know what chemicals real gold is comprised of, however, “common sense” suggests something in gold counteracts the sty & definitely helps the associated pain. I also found the “gold therapy” on several other websites when typing in, “Will rubbing gold on a sty make it go away?” I asked the person the same question that told me about the gold therapy & he did give me an answer, but that was over 40+ yrs, ago & I’ve forgotten what he said.
The sty is STILL on my eyelid/inside my eye, therefore, it’s not a “shifting sty.” I simply stated after trying the “hot mug/teabag” therapy, a water-like “pocket of skin” located immediately below the sty had shifted down further on my cheek after trying these suggestions.
I read all “admin” replies above & couldn’t help but notice you weren’t condescending /rude to others, therefore, I have to wonder why you felt compelled to be sarcastic toward me. Your attempt to insult my intelligence was disrespectful/uncalled for. Why reply at all if you had no intention of answering my question or trying to help me ? Btw, I’m 59+ yrs. old.
Hello J. Renee,
Welcome back
I have to say this comment is even more interesting then the last.
Chemicals in gold? I believe there is only one chemical in gold, which is gold (Au).
Common sense, using common sense what do you believe is actually being transferred into your body by simply rubbing gold (gold ring) on a stye?
On several other websites I visited after typing in “Google” as you suggested “Will rubbing gold on a sty make it go away?, but i did add an “e” to the end of sty. I could not find one website ,where an actual medical doctor with or even without any credibility confirms the use of gold to heal a stye. In fact I couldn’t find any kinds of scientific data to back up your claims.
Did find lots of “My mother said”, “Grandma told me”, “My friend showed me this neat trick.” What that clearly shows, tall tales never die.
You are correct my comment was rude and I do apologize for that, as I took what you said as humorous without any serious merit to it. I am sorry
If you would like to have a serious discussion / debate on gold and it healing properties for a stye (must stay on topic). I’m all for it, but I will not waste time with any statements you have without data to back it up. He said, she said is not good enough.
Btw, I’m 48 yrs old.
Good day to you sir.
When I awoke yesterday, I saw what appeared to be a stye beneath my lower eyelid. There’s also a little pin-hole “opening” on my bottom eyelid. I put a hot washcloth on the area a couple of times last night & then rubbed my 14K gold ring on the area several times. I just tried the hot mug therapy, & the “bump” has shifted downward about an inch on my face. While the area isn’t as painful today,, the “bump” affects my vision somewhat. When I look down, the area looks/feels like I’ve been punched in the eye. A man told me back in the ’70′s if I ever got a stye, to rub gold on the stye. This method has always worked in the past. In fact, rubbing gold stopped the stye from forming & was gone the next day. Please understand the gold must be REAL, ie., 14K, 18K, etc. I’ve told several other people to rub gold on their styes & this method always worked for them.
My question is, since the stye has shifted downward on my face, will the stye dissolve by itself if I continue the hot mug remedy? Are there any “over-the-counter” salves or medications that will make the stye dissolve naturally ? Any further “light” you could shed on this matter would be greatly appreciated as I do not have insurance & don’t want to have to go to an opthamologist. Thank you for this site & any future information you/others may provide.
After doing the tea bag method or the boiling water, will they stye just go away? I heard you had to pop it with a needle?
Hello Mariah,
Please don’t be poking at your eye with a needle, you may cause more harm then good. I believe this is horrible advice to give or follow.
Applying these above methods will help the stye to heal faster while giving comfort from the pain. Will the stye just go away? Yes, over time, but not in an hour or even overnight as many would leave you to believe. These methods are to help get rid of a stye, by speeding up the recovery time.
my son is 5 yrs old and he continuously get styes on his eye. i have tried the warm rag and wiping his eye with Johnson and Johnson no tear baby shampoo and that’s not working. can anyone assist me on another way to prevent these from forming on my 5 year old eye?
Hello latesha,
You are doing right by keeping your son’s eye cleaned, J&J works wonderful, but the bigger issue is why. Why is the little guy having recurring styes? Could there be a possibility of a simple virus he has that is causing this? This is when my best advice would be, time to visit a doctor, if you haven’t done so already. I can just image the discomfort he is always going through, styes are painful enough for us adults to deal with.
I wish you and your son the best, hopefully it’s something simple, with a quick remedy to getting rid of his styes.
Hello Danielle
You are most welcome. What a bummer getting styes so often, sorry to hear this. I could not even imagine having to deal with one, maybe once a year….but twice a month
I hope you have better luck using the tea bag, but if not, did you see the boiled egg method? Give off soothing heat for a very long time.
Hope you get rid of that stye fast, best of luck!
Thank you! I always try the warm compress, but you have to run the cloth under hot water like every 3 minutes to make the cloth stay warm and the process kind of gets annoying. I am going to try the tea bag thing this time:) I have this problem with sties, I get them like twice a month. They are disgusting….
Im going to see a doctor soon. I hope they do something about it. Yes i am trying the methods you gave us. Thank you
Hello Anna,
Oh boy, sorry to hear a trip to the doctor is in order. That is the best method out of them all, seeing a doctor. They will get you fixed up right quick and if you pick-up any good tips, please share if you would.
Best of luck at the doctors
I Am trying both tea bag and boiling mug.
I hope it works.
Hi Anna
I’m sorry to hear you have a stye
I hope they work for you too. Just remember whichever one you decide to try…multiple times throughout the day works best.
Have a wonderful day!
I also have problems with stye’s but I’m confused on how to add these mixtures to get rid of it, if its on my eyelid. I think for now i will just do the cloth and tea cup. Because i don’t want to risk getting anything into my eye. Also if people sleep with make up on this is one way for me to get a stye. so DON’T SLEEP WITH MAKE UP ON! styes kill and we just want them to go away!
Hi susan,
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment, sorry to hear you have eye stye problems
Any of the methods above that include adding addition healing herbs, are added to the water to make a mix. Not to the stye itself.
Very good tip to share..Sleeping with makeup on is a big mistake. Being aware of this will help cut down on eye styes, especially if you are prone to them.
Have a good day susan
I have just tried the tea bag – instant relief! I’m going to continue with it and also the cup of hot water. This is such a handy website I’m so glad I came across it! It really helps to read all the ideas and also people’s feedback.
Hi Jo
Thanks for leaving a comment
The tea bag works nice doesn’t it? Glad you gave it a try, please do continue applying a few times throughout the day, your eye will thank you for it.
I do appreciate all the feedback, comments and helpful tips shared.
I told my coworker about my stye today. She said to rub gold on it.Then it should heal within a day or so.I told her I don’t have gold so she let me rub my eye with her white gold ring. Not sure if it will work. I’m not going to wait to find out because I want to try the tea bag thing. Just wanted to share.
Hello katy
I have read about rubbing gold on a stye as a method to get rid of a stye, but don’t see how it could possible help. Everything I have seen points to it as being just an old wives’ tale / urban legend. I think you will have much more success using a tea bag a few times during the day.
I hope your eye stye heals fast.
Hi:) what do you mean by making a seal with the stye eye and the mug of warm water? this stye has been killing me for a few days now:( thanks!
Hi Rachel S.
It’s very easily done. In a sitting position, place the mug directly in front of you on a table. Now, bend your head down as to peer into the bottom mug, continue slowly until you make contact to the rim, thus forming a seal over the stye. It may be best to have a mug that is not too wide, a smaller opening will make a better seal. Please make sure the mug is held securely while doing so.
Happy New Year
Thanks for the help everyone, my stye is in the extremely swollen process and a white bump. I had a hot wash cloth on all night and this morning. How will I know if its draining? This is my first one.
Hello Bre,
Sounds like your stye is in the early stage of forming. Great that you started right away with the warm compress, keep at it. Hopefully by doing so, you will keep the swelling and pain to a minimum (lets hope so). If it does fill and swell much bigger, there will be no mistaking when it drains as you will see the discharge left on the compress.
Good luck and keep applying the compress, you’ll be glad you did at such an early stage.
Im 13 almost 14 now and I’ve had my stye for over a year lots of pain thanks for the tips
Hello Bridget.
That is a very long time for someone your age to have to suffer with a painful stye. I hope you have been to see a Doctor for help. Usually a common stye should heal on it’s own within a week or two.
You are welcome for the stye healing tips and wish you the best
Hello hollie,
. They can be really painful for some folks. I’m sorry nothing is relieving your stye pain. Are you positive it is a stye? Just asking, as you will know better then me, but if it something more serious then a common eye stye, please see a doctor.
Nothing like the pain from a stye
While using these methods, you need to be persistent, don’t expect much after one or two applications. Try using the warm compress as much as possible through out the day.
none of this is working for me, my eye started to get sore and swollen last night and this morning it was swollen really bad, i have tried all the methods and i am in total pain, even my eyelashes are very sore and delicite, why is the methods working for everyone but me?
Hi Sharnie,
I’m sorry to hear about your stye, and yes they can be painful. Sounds as though you don’t have much on hand to try being at school so you are very limited on trying most of these methods. Keep on with the warm compress, if that is all you have to work with, better then nothing. Maybe a visit to the school nurse, if one is available.
I hope the pain goes away and your stye heals soon
I am 13 and knowing younger people it hurts allot more because they feel they can’t handle it, i have a stye on my eye and it hurts so much, i don’t want to stay home from school as it is only my last week anyway, i have been putting a warm rag on my eye for about twenty minutes and it hasn’t helped, things like honey and tea bags and all that stuff i can’t do because i don’t have any of that, is there anything else i could try.
a useful trick I learned from my doctor for my daughters stye…use a hardboiled egg. The shell retains the heat longer and you really need to constant heat to make a difference.
Hello sharip,
Wow! What an excellent useful trick you have shared. Heated hard boiled egg will retain the heat, giving the infected eye a constant supply of relieving warmth. Very Good share indeed! I’ll be looking forward to hearing how this method works out for anyone that gives it a try.
Thank you sharip and have a great day
Hey Jordan,
Sorry to hear about your stye…Good thing is you have time on your side, nine days to your B-day. The stye is only three days old so it’s still actively forming. Right now you are fighting an active stye and not one that has already developed and started it’s healing processes. stick with one method, and repeat it. One application will never be enough to get rid of a stye.
Please don’t stick a needle in your eye!! Only asking for more trouble.
okay, my first stye so happy…not really. i tried the tea bags all they do is sooth it no shrinkage of puffiness whats so ever. the eye drops just cause my vision to be blurry, the mug and hot water thing just soothes the pain again no shrinkage. i’m this close to take a syringe and draining the sucker. i can see the clear white circle with a black head, my guess is thats the area where it formed. my birthday is in 9 days, and i’ve had this stye for 3 days now. i know ooo big deal but i’m the type of person who just gets things done quick and fast. if i have to drain the sucker with a needle i will. are there any other new ideas out there?
I have a Military Ball to go to in 36 hours. Will the mug trick work in time? Also, I know makeup is probably a horrible idea, but I’m doing it anyway. Beauty is pain, right?
Hi Sara,
The mug trick is a great way to relieve the painfulness of the stye and hopefully bring down the condition to where it is bearable. Thirty six hours is not much time, try repeating the method every few hours and see what that does. I hope you enjoy the Military Ball, best of luck to you.
Hello Carly,
I would also try giving the hot mug method a try. It is a great tip shared by samantha and many had good luck with it.
I am trying the tea trick right now!!!!! Does it work very well? I am going to Duluth tomorrow and i DO NOT want it to ruin my trip!!!! What works the best?
Hello Tyler,
The common stye will form in the area along the edge of one’s eyelid. Now if you are feeling a lump inside the eyelid this may be an internal hordeolum. Best thing to do, is visit your doctor for confirmation that it is an internal hordeolum and proper treatment. Hope your eye heals fast
Hey,
Is it possible for a stye to be in the inside of your lid?
It’s the 3 year anniversary of me having my stye. It won’t leave!! I’ve tried every treatment possible (including doctors trying to remove it on several different occasions). Everyone had something different to say, and the last doctor pretty much said “deal with it”. Then I was advised accutane too but that didn’t help for the stye. I don’t know what to do. I think it’s pretty much a scar at this point, but every now and then it feels even more irritated as though it was still “active”.
Hey Jon,
Three years, wow that is an awful long time to be dealing with a stye. Is there any possibility it’s not a stye but scar tissue from maybe healing in a bad way? Boy, I can imagine how awful it is to have this for so long.
i luv these suggestions…BYE BYE STYE!!!!!!(^^^)
Hello Kelly,
Good luck tonight using the tea bag, I hope your stye heals fast.
My Doctor told me to use a baby shampoo to keep the eye clean while it heals. It’s gentle and it doesn’t burn. Thanks for the other suggestions on how to rid the stye faster. I am going to try the tea bag tonight!
my 3yr old has a stye any good ways to help her out
hey tylor,
In the above article, many different tips have been provided to help get rid of a stye. I hope your child feels better.
re: the mug trick – do you rest your eye IN the water? or on the hot mug?? please respond ASAP!
Hello helpless,
What you want to do is make a seal over the opening of the mug with the eye that is infected and let the steam vapor do it’s thing for fast relief.
Gosh, I wish I would have had that information earleir!
Wow thank You Samantha Your Method worked in a few hrs i didn’t see I was worried and went to the eye Doc and charged me $95
the next day the stye was gone thanks to the mug and hot water method I regret going to the DR
Woke up this morning with a stye..my eye was almost swollen shut! A friend of mine found your website. I have to say the mug treatment is the best way to go! I just tried it, and it has given me so much relief! Thank you!!! Just hope it works its magic and will be gone soon! Thank you…. Jamie

I’ve had my stye for 6 months now and nothing works, I’ve tried hot compress, tea bag, 4 different eye ointments prescribed by the doctor and also 5 different types on antibiotics, the doctor won’t refer me as he says we need to try every option first but it’s so uncomfortable ;( I dont know what else to try. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Just wanted to say thanks for the treatment tips. I have a nasty stye on my left eye right now and I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow. I’ve been doing warm compresses the past two days, hopefully “the mug” trick works tonight.
I woke up with a stye yesterday, the only thing I knew to do was baby shampoo that didn’t work it has in the past. So I looked up this and I just about to try the cup of hot water in a cup and the tea bag also. This is so ugly and uncomfortable its got to go…
Hello Tasha,
Sorry to hear about your stye, don’t ya just hate waking up and having that thing starring back at you?
Give the mug a try, give it two tries if needed…..I think you’ll be happy with the outcome.
If not, don’t suffer get to a Doctor for more help.
Good luck!!
I have had my stye for almost a year now…
i tried the hot compresses and doc gave me antibiotics drop but it’s not going away
( I am gonna try some of the methods here..i dk if they will help since its been there for almost a year. I am too scared to do the surgical drainage.
Hiya Sarah,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment
That is a very long time to have a on-going stye, are you sure it’s not a chalazion?
Please if you haven’t done so, seek medical attention..
Best of luck to you!
A stye is also called a hordeolum. A sty is a pimple caused by skin germs that infect the tunnel through which the eyelashes emerge. A stye is usually tender and eventually develops a pointy white head before the head bursts. They can be quite tender and irritating.
A moist, hot compress will speed resolution. Antibiotics are not necessary. The stye has to drain, whether on own or with a doctor’s help. Sometimes sty’s can grow so large that surgical drainage is advised.
There are some look-alike lesions that can mimic a stye, so if it doesn’t clear promptly in 5-7 days be sure you see your ophthalmologist for an evaluation.
Try some baby shampoo, that opens the pores of your skin so the sty will clean.
do you wash the outside of your eye, or actually let the shampoo get in your eye?
Hey everyone,
My mum used to get sty’s every week and now I’m getting them! Sure all that wet cloths and drops get rid of them but I need something to get them to stay them away!?
Any ideas?
Good idea, I just tried and It literally worked, within 20 seconds! I would like anyone who is reading this to know that this girl is a genius! I just canceled an operation for my sty thanks to her.
I owe you one reeca!
Lex.
I developed a Stye3 days before my bridal shower…I bought some expensive drops that seemed to do nothing…Itried Samantha’s method last night because I couldn’t get to sleep…relief in 5 minutes!! I still had slight discomfort when I woke up this morning, but I will do the “eye in mug” method again…Thanks for the help!!!
Hey Mina,

Boy, what bad timing for a stye. I hope the mug works out for you, and Congrats on the bridal shower.
The hot mug steam really worked! my fist time with a stye and I’m glade it’s not there anymore. thanks samantha!

I’ve got my first stye in the mountains.i had no clue what i was. My eye was swollen, red, and puffed up. i tried everything o get rid of it, but it jut kept coming back. i went to an eye specialist a coupe of times and thy told em to put warm compresses, so i did. now its been over 2 years and my eye isn’t puffed but on the bottom lining of my eye there is a little bump. its so embarrassing, and i do everything to hide it but i just cant. everyone stares at me and ask me whats on my eye, and i reply a stye i wanna get rid of it so bad! i feel so self conscious. i hope these treatments work. what treatment do you recommend?
Hello Lia,
Wow, two years of suffering with a stye? Sure it’s a stye? Give a couple of these treatments a try, if not and nothing is working for you…Please give a Doctor another visit.
Wishing you the best!

I wish you the best of luck, please stop back and give us an update.
If I do the mug with hot water am I suppose to put my eye under the water or just hover over it? Should My eye be open or closed?
Hello Kelly,
Samantha gets all the credit for this method, and I need to add this to the list…..but I would think, making a seal over the rim of the cup with either eye opened or closed is the way to go.
Best of luck getting rid of that stye!
For the coriander method..how do you wash you face with it…do you just splash your face or use cotton to dab??
Hello Harini,
The best way, would be to use a clean soft cloth, dipped into the mixture after boiling for a few minutes, then applying it to the infected eye, by dabbing gently, and repeating.
Hope this helps…
Boiling water in the mug= genious!! Thank you so much!
YOU SAVED MY LIFE!! I felt like I got punched in the eye, this stye hurt so bad and the boiling water in the mug really did the trick! You deserve $1,000,000 dollars! Thanks!!!
Hello jacklynnMarie’
You are so welcome, and I hope things work out for you.
Handling all that money is a dirty job, but someone has to do it
Good luck taking care of that stye.
Have a great day!!
thanks for the remedies!
working at LAX i deal with all sorts of currency and thought i had an infection because of the money handling turns out its a very severe stye!
Hello samantha,
Thank you for taking the time to post a comment.
Wow! What a wonderful method you have there, so simple, just a cup and some water, very nice share indeed…
This should be very helpful to our readers, thank you for contributing!!
here is an EXTREMLEY fast way to get rid of a stye. boil some water or just really hot water could work, and pour it into a mug about half way. Then put your eye with the stye in the mug and rest your head on the rim. wait a few minutes and boom your stye will immediately be shrunken. (if the water is too hot, put your eye on, then off for a few seconds then on again, etc, until you can keep it on there. the steam really helps.)
I’m about to see how it works..I’ve had my stye for over a year now
Hey josh,
Thanks for stopping by!!
Good luck getting rid of that stye, a year is a long time to be dealing with this type of eye ailment.
Hope it works out for ya…
wow a stye that last a year!! good lord …never heard of that ..whew
Stay with this guys, you’re helping a lot of people. I came here to “How to get rid of a stye” looking for help and ended up reading all the comments that others had left, this little blog is wonderful.
I too have a stye almost a year..
What did you do to solved the Stye problems.
Thanks
Thank You! This is so much more convenient than the hot compress. You have just become my Stye-goddess:)…all hail Samantha, goddess of steam…lol…thanks again.
did it go away?
Oh my gosh…. Immediate relief! Thank you
I will have to do this every couple hours or so until it really goes away for good!
how long do u keep it on??
You are genious. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I love you! Lol for real though.. you’re great, this was a life saver.
Does the mug trick work for styes in the top eyelid?
Gonna give these a try next time, I usually use an over the counter suave, but it feels very uncomfortable to keep in the eye, and blurs my vision. These stye remedies sound to be a better way to treat them. I plan to keep some of the ingredients listed on hand at all times. Thank you, for a very helpful blog
My Daughter woke yesterday, with a swollen eye, ended up being a stye. I felt bad because of the pain she was having ( her first bout with a stye) and decided to do a search online for a remedy. I want to thank you for such a detailed list of different ideas to try, I never new, with just some simple household items, stye relief was possible, thank you……
when doing the tea bag thing, do i drape the bag over my head or do i get like a cotton ball get it wet from the bag then wipe my eye? how do i do it?
You just lay the tea bag on your eye.
What kind of tea bag do you use??? there are 100kinds at the market?
Hi Li$$a
I did answer you on teabag selection in your last post, maybe you missed it. Any teabag brand will work, yes there are 100kinds on the market, but it’s only brand and flavors that set them apart. Tea is the main ingredient in every teabag. Anyone will do.
I suffer from styes multiple times a year, home care methods that you have listed do work wonderful. I always make sure I keep some of these ingredients at home always. This blog should be very helpful for those looking for a safe way to sooth a painful stye.
Assisted me a lot, just what I was looking for : D.
Gold! you save my day
I’ve been here a few times and it seems like your articles get more informative every time. Keep it up I appreciate reading them.
I love this! SO happy i found this! Just what i was looking for!
I have a problem with styes, get them a few times a year, very painful. The tips you posted are very good, my favorite is using a teabag. It does sting at first but gives fast relief. It’s the method I would recommend trying, very helpful post.
Go and buy Brewers Yeast right away. The same day you start using this the pain goes away. Within 3 days you don’t even know you have it. Keep using it for 1 week just to make sure it goes away completely.
If you get the bigger tablet take it 3 times a day. If you get the smaller round tablet take at least 2 of them 3 times a day.
Read up on Brewers Yeast and Eye Health.
