      Thank you for commenting.
Are you saying there is a connection between styes and HSV1?
When I seen your comment, I thought “really, this is interesting” so I started doing an Internet search, but coming up empty on any kind of connection between the two. Could you point me to a source, for more information?

Hi, I got my first stye last Sunday, inside of my eyelid. Its on the inner part of my right eye, almost at the top waterline, but not quite. At first it was very painful, it felt kind of like a bruise, then it started swelling the next day until the pain was unbearable. I talked to my doctor and we confirmed that it was in fact a stye. She also told me not to pop it. However, now the stye isn’t painful or swollen, but when I lift it it’s still there. I wouldn’t know unless i look at it or when i touch my eyelid and feel it. What can I do to get rid of it?

      Hello Flora
I’m sorry you have this horrible stye pain. Inside the eyelids seem to be reported as the most painful of all areas to have a stye. Good on you for talking with a doctor, now that you know for sure it is an eye stye, time to do something about it. Please listen to the doctor and don’t try and pop it.

If I were you, I would start with the hot compress, it’s the simplest out of all the methods. What you want to accomplish is heating the stye, doing so, multiple times throughout the day. This should also bring on some needed relief from pain.

Then go right into the cup method, try to be aggressive with these tips. It may take some work on your part, but it will be worth it.

I hope everything works out, and you get rid of a that stye quickly. :)

What happens when you pop it?!

    • admin
      May 13, 2012 | 2:59 pm

      Hi Taylor
Basically by popping a stye, you are causing trauma to the area, which is not ready to drain naturally on it’s own. The possibility of spreading the infection and or causing a longer healing time.

      Hello Natalie
Are these people who are telling you it’s a stye, adults or friends? What I’m trying to get at, are you getting good advice, to what exactly is your eye issue and that it is a stye? Parents? Are your parents aware of this problem? If not, Please show them what is going on with your eye. I’m just saying all of this cause, I don’t know what your situation is……

Seeing the school nurse is another option to think about.

I think in your case the easiest would be using a warm/hot compress, as often as you can. This method works very well, makes the eye area feel much better and will move the healing process along very quickly.

But my best advice to you…..seek help from parents or another trusted adult.

I hope your eye stye goes away soon :)

Hey, the other day while i was at school i went to rub my eye and the eye hurt, i wasn’t sure what was wrong this has never happened before, but i didn’t think anything big was wrong. Well before I went to school today I put make-up on just thinking my eye had a little redness.(Is that bad to where make-up on a possible stye?) Well while i was at school I showed my friend and she told me the bump was a PIMPLE! i just couldn’t believe there would be a pimple on my eye. Well I came home and all i know is my eye is red and looks like a bump but you cant really feel the bump, also it hurts when i blink, and touch my eye. Do you think this could be a stye? Another question do you think i should go to the doctor right away or use these method’s first. And would antibiotics work for this to go away?

    • admin
      May 2, 2012 | 10:36 pm

      Hi miastaffinie
From your description, it does sound as if you have a stye. Maybe pinkeye also, so hard to say for sure without seeing. Either way going to a doctor is always advisable and a smart choice. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics depending on the severity, or he may just advise you to apply a hot compress to the stye.

I would start applying a hot compress asap, until you decide if a visit to see the doctor is in order. The hot compress or any of the stye in eye tips here may work faster then you think. Saving you that trip to the doctors.

If you can go without makeup for a couple days until your eye heals all the better. If not wear it when only needed, take it off when you can. It’s a much better practice to keep the eye area as clean as possible until healed, though a little makeup isn’t gonna be a big deal.

      Hoping you the best…

Hello, i woke up this morning and my eyelid was hurting I didn’t realize anything was wrong Untill about half-way through work, I went to the bathroom and look and there was this thing, I think it’s a style but I’m not sure, It is behind the line of my eye-lashes but still visible from a mirror. It’s not very red but has a decent sized white head on it. Is that a normal stye?

      April 30, 2012 | 12:20 pm

      Hey Kai,
What the heck is going on with you and these stye in eye problems lately? I think it might be time to give your lifestyle a good look.

Have you been over stressed? School, work or just plain life? Stress is a leading cause of styes.

What about makeup, have you been sharing any eye makeup with anyone? Another big no no….Might be a good idea to clean out your old eye makeup for fresh. Don’t share!

Might have to spend more time cleaning your eyes each and every night. All makeup needs to come off and a good eyewash nightly will help.

If you are acceptable to recurring stye in eye issues, it will come down to paying close attention to eye care daily.

I would use any of the methods above that have worked for you in the past. Apply and get rid of the styes you have now. Then start really paying more attention to preventative care each and every day.

I hope you get this under control, hate to hear of your suffering with this eye condition. :)

P.S. Even if you don’t have a regular doctor, there are always walk in type clinics available if needed.

          Welcome back Kai
There you go, I bet the stress and all the hard work keeping your grades up is causing your stye problem. Stress is a leading factor as to why most do end up with stye in eye issues. Do you know styes are a college students most common eye aliment, all because of stress….

Good luck with those grades :)

Can you plaease help me to get rid of this stye i get one every year, but last year i had a stye for four months and had to get surgery but it came came back. And know ive had it for a week i tried the hard boiled egg trick but it did not work, and i dont wanna get another surgery any advice?

    • admin
      April 26, 2012 | 11:05 pm

      Hi Kenny
Anyone of these methods that you try, you have to remember..”multiple times”. Meaning one application, no matter which one you pick will never be enough to get results. Heat to the stye is what you are trying to achieve and for long amounts of time works best.

I hate to hear that you suffer so long once you get a stye. Some reason you may have a healing time much longer then the average person. This means more work on your part, by multiple and longer applications mentioned above.

The bad news is and I’m sorry to say, none of these methods may not work for you. If you needed surgery in the past to rid yourself of a stye….it could be a possibility each time, surgery will be needed (I hope not).

May I ask, did your doctor give you a reason to why, eye styes are common for you?

You doing the right thing…going to a doctor. I wish I could be of more help to you. Until you do get to the doctors, keep applying these methods, even if it’s just for relief.

I hope you stop back and let me know how you made out after seeing the doctor. You might have some interesting information to share.

          Best of luck Kenny :)

I’ve had a chalazion for several months. I went to the eye doctors and everything and am now having surgery in 2 weeks. All of the sudden my stye hurts, has gotten closer to my lash line and is coming to a head. I don’t know if it’s possible for it to be a stye or not it but it really hurts and is getting large fast! Don’t know what’s happening but I’m freakin out!

    • admin
      April 23, 2012 | 10:08 pm

      Jen
Do you currently have both a chalazion and a stye? I’m a little confused as you used both terms. If it is a stye and coming to a head, this is good. Applying a warm compress will help to expel the discharge.

If this is the chalazion that needs surgery, and it’s getting larger, it might be best to give your doctor a call He/she will be able to advise you over the phone, being familiar with the problem, as you are a patient.

I hope everything goes ok for you.

I have had a stye under my lower left eyelid since christmas :( If you touch the lower eyelid you can feel the lump underneath the skin.. went to the doctors about it and she said the best way was to apply a hot cloth to it as often as possible. I’ve been doing that as often as I can but I don’t think I’m doing it enough. Goin to give the mug trick a go as it seems to be a handy and simple way of getting the heat on it!

      Hello Lia
Since Christmas? Wow, way too long, lets see if we can get rid of that stye…

You went to the doctors, so you know for certain it is a stye, good. I must say though, having a stye for such a long period of time, puzzles me. I mean it’s an common aliment and for the most part should heal on it’s own without doing anything within a week or so. There have been many that left comments, having the same issue. A stye lasting for an extraordinary length of time. I need to do some research on this issue, for the reason why.

Yes, often as possible is correct. I try to remind folks that as much as I can. This is when too much, happens to be a good thing.

Hope you get rid of that stye and soon :)

lastnight i got a stye and it really hurts i am so glad i found this website because i was going to pop it. i am excited to get home so i can do one of these tricks for my eye and relieve some pain… can styes make you have headache?

    • admin
      April 22, 2012 | 7:27 pm

      Hello lexxi
Oh yeah, styes can be painful at times. I would caution you about trying to pop it. Just remember pick one of the methods to get rid of an eye stye and apply as often as you can. These methods work great, but you won’t see any improvement with just one application.

I imagine if the eye stye pain is really bothering you, it might cause a headache. I think it might be you stressing about the stye, causing the headache. Just try to relax, it will be fine.

Good luck and thanks for stopping by :)

I noticed a stye developing on my eyelid about a week or so ago. I thought it would be gone in few days and I did nothing. One day a woke up with a really large stye, and to be frank I panicked. I thought going to the doctor was inevitable, and I really try avoiding doctors as much as I can. I decided to try home-treating it first and I found this site.
And I must admit the Mug trick really worked. I also used a tea bag, and I also think that camomile tea is the best option and many people told me to use camomile tea. I really found the information on this blog helpful, so thank you for that. It’s really refreshing to find a place where you can really find useful information, given in laymen’s terms. I’d like to add that the chloramphenicol cream also helps. I recommend it strongly, it relieves you from the pain and it protects your eye from the bacteria that’s gathered in the stye. Here, in Macedonia, it is very cheap and it can be found in any pharmacy, I don’t know about elsewhere, but I doubt that it would be expensive. The stye started discharging after only a day of treatment and it’s very small now, I think it’d be totally gone in a day or two, so thanks again! :)
Also, I’d like to share old wife’s tale or two concerning styes, since I’ve heard quite a few from older people in my country. First, it is believed that a stye would appear on your eye if you have been given an angry look by a pregnant woman. Secondly, it is believed that the stye would disappear if you wink at a girl that’s wearing red. Another solution is having a woman who’s breastfeeding spray a few drops of milk into your eye.

      Hello Viktor
Wow great post, I enjoyed reading what you had to say. Thank you for taking the time to comment. :)

The mug trick is awesome huh? Most that have tried it are pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I’m glad it worked for you. Stopped that trip to the doctors for you also. I’m with you on that notion, less doctor visits the better, stay healthy..

Second time this week that camomile tea was brought up for healing a stye. I plan on looking into this more and hopefully if it’s worth the time to do a post on it. Maybe just add it to this post here on the next update.

Also, I really appreciate the kind words about my stye blog. My goal was to try and do something different then all the other sites on “eye styes” out there. I wanted my site to be user friendly, and deliver quality information mixed with a little personality and easy to read. I still have lots of work to do on it, but it’s coming along nicely. Kinda wish it was a blog that folks would come back to read multiple times, for most folks it will be a one time thing. Oh well….

I like those old tales that you shared too. If you have more, please share… would love to hear :) Next time I get a stye (hope never) have to find lady to spray some milk in my eye…lol.

Thanks again Viktor! Have a great day!

A new trick that I just found (didn’t have any of the other stuff on location) I put ice on it to reduce swelling and it def. Helped with the pain. Can’t wait to get home and use your methods! This thing is kicking my butt!

I think ice does have it’s place, though it’s the heat that brings the stye to drain. Placing ice on it afterwards would be great, to then bring done the swelling. Great tip!

Boy, I’m sorry to hear that your daughter has to deal with a stye in eye, so many times throughout the year. :(

Yeah, those goopy (sp?) suave type ointments tend to make seeing a real choir at times.

Just pick any type of tea, I believe it’s the tea’s flavor that sets them apart. The basic ingredient is tea, so any teabag should do the trick.

Best of luck to your daughter :)

    Hello Dee
Sorry to hear about your stye. Makes you want to crawl back under the covers, hoping it’s just a bad dream.
Keep up with the treatments, you’ll feel better. If the stye ointment works, great!

Wishing you the best and a speedy stye recovery :)

this horrible stye greeted me Saturday morning… eye in the mug trick helps to soothe the pain… still swollen and my eye is still red. is that normal? anyway, I’ve been using over the counter stye ointment on my eye to lessens the crusting that happens overnight.

    Thanks for the tips!

Im not sure that my infection is a stye tho.its on the top lid and its swollen and red and just sore when I blink…and a little sensitive to light which makes my eye watery, and it has a white head in the center…no other pain like you described

      Hey Megan
      You are back! :)

If it’s not a eye stye or too early to tell for sure, maybe it could be pink eye. Whichever it may be, you will benefit from applying anyone of the above methods to ease the pain.

I hope it’s neither a stye or pink eye, best of luck to ya!

Just what I was looking for…simple and down to the point! Not to mention all the other sites give scientific explanations that are pointless to read cause I don’t understand them

      Hiya Megan
Well thank you very much for that kind comment :)

Many sites/blogs tend to go off on a more, as you say “scientific explanations” and you know why? Cause they are copying each other, without thinking about the needs of the reader. I feel that simple and to the point while thinking about, what my visitors would get the most out of…is the way to go.

it was the same stye but it got smaller again, i changed the time i used the Vaseline. now i use it once in the morning when i wake up, then i use warm compresses all day, then i put it on again before i go to bed.

      Hello Kai,
Crazy, it just doesn’t want to go away :(

Best I can say, keep up with the warm/hot compresses. If it doesn’t go away soon, might be best to have a doctor give it a look. Just to make sure you are dealing with a common stye and not something more.

      Good luck!

      Hey Kai,
What the heck happened? Hold on now, you did touch it. You decided to try Vaseline on it, a tip from your mom.

Is this a new stye or the same one?

Get rid of the Vaseline, clean your eye as best you can with mild soap and water. Start applying a hot compress to the eye stye, as often as you can for the day.

      Hope this helps

    Hello Renu,
Glad you like the tips :)
Both eyes have styes? Wow, one stye is bad enough, but two….just plain horrible.
You have time, this is a good thing. I would pick one of the above stye eye remedies and start applying asap. Stop wasting time thinking about it, just do it.

    That’s my faster relief suggestion.

Thanks to all for the DIY tips…especially steamy cup’o water. I arrived at your site looking for help with chalazion…and hope that these lose-the-sty-methods will have similar effect on these other kind of darn eye lumps/bumps. Hey there Smilin’
I like that. DIY tips for healing styes, might want to use that as my next post headline :)

Oh, the cup of water has been a very popular method to try out. Pretty nifty idea huh? Got to give thanks to Samantha for letting us in on it. Boy, I wonder if she has ever came back to visit….she might be surprised how popular her tip has become.

Now that chalazion you’re hosting there :) should benefit from these methods also. Much of what I have researched, the same home care methods as above should help out.

Thank you for leaving such a nice comment and taking the time to read my blog. Stop back and let us know how you made out.

    Hello Kori-Lynn
Thank you for the kind words, I’m glad you liked my site :)

I think you waking up with the stye eye even more swollen is just the natural progression of the infection going on. By cleaning the makeup off your eyes, I don’t believe you have made it worse (you may want to get some fresh eye makeup.) No need to be nervous about trying these methods, they will help out a lot and applying one of them is better then doing nothing at all.

The hot compress is a good choice, but remember it needs to be done as often as you can through out the day. This is a time where more is better :)

Passing a stye on to another can happen though not as easy as one would think, not like a common cold…So, I believe you will be safe going to the party without any worries of making your brother sick.

Good luck and have fun at the party!

    March 24, 2012 | 11:47 am

This is an amazing site! :)
But, here’s my dilemma… I’ve had a stye growing for the past three days, and today’s the fourth. I was a dumb dumb last night after going to the movies, and when I was wiping my make-up off, my stye(on the bottom, inner corner of my eye) discharged. I know you said not to allow that, and now I’m nervous to see if any of these methods work. I had put warm cloths on my eye, and I woke up with the stye more swollen.
What in your opinion would be the better way to get it to go down? Same things, or something else?
Besides, my younger brother’s birthday party, and I don’t don’t want to give him the stye… When are styes no longer contageous?
    Thank you very much!

So I noticed yesterday that my inner lower eyelid was sore and a little puffy. We think that it might be the beginning of my first stye :( I’m gonna try the boiling water thing, that seems like it worked for a lot of people… I’m not sure if I really have a stye cuz I looked up pics and mine looks nothing like those– then again I might have a minor one or the start of one. Anyway, thanks for all the tips!!!! Now if you’ll excuse me, I must execute my stye…. muahahaha! (ok that was a little creepy sorry lol)

One method i have. Okay so i had my first stye just the other day. I was searching everything on how to get rid of one. Then i just thought of this. Get a pair of swimming goggles. Fill the side that you would put on your infected eye with warm water so theres no air or seldom air. Then put on your eye until the water gets cold :)

I’ve had a stye for 5+ months, went to the eye dr. and got antibiotics which didn’t work. Now they want to do surgery to remove the stye. I really want to avoid surgery, is there anything else to try?

    • admin
      March 20, 2012 | 4:22 pm

      Hey Chris
Boy, 5+ months dealing with a stye….I’d be like “can I have that surgery today?.” Seriously, if that is what your doctor recommends, I would very much be all for it. If after 5 months and nothing else has helped, it has to be the best option for you. Have the surgery and be done with it, imagine free from your eye stye after all those months…

      Best of luck to you….

    • Josh
      March 22, 2012 | 7:50 pm

Chris dont fret the surgery. i suffer from styes literally every time i get stressed out. a couple years ago when i got married and bought my house i was so stressed out that i had 3 styes at the same time (2 in my right eye and 1 in my left). one would not go away and turned into a hard ball in the bottom of my eyelid, surgery was the only option. very simple operation, completly awake and short time. all be it uncomfortable the surgery was not painful. as to everyone else thanks for the mug trick this was the first time i have heard of it and will try it tonight as i am suffering from another right now.

Hi! Wow, first, I want to say this is a very informative site! And I’m thankful that you are still responding to comments!

I woke up yesterday (Wednesday) and the inside of my eyelid was very red and a little swollen.. Today it seems to be worst, more swollen and red
    is this an internal sty?
How long till I should see the white pus head form?
My doctor said he thinks it is a stye.. And prescribed me fucithalmic eye drops.. Do they help?

Thanks again for all the information!!!:)

      Hello Jean,
Thank you so much for the kind words :) I’m trying to give out as much useful information as possible, striving to give more, where other info sites are lacking. I also try to answer each and every comment, if someone takes the time out of their lives to comment or ask for help….I’ll do my best.

Wow, I’m surprised the doctor didn’t give you more instructions to help alone the healing process. It does sound as an internal stye. The best you can do along with the eye drops, is apply warm heat. Do this as often as you can during the day. It may take a couple of days, but you should see a pretty fast improvement with pain and swelling.

Hope you get rid of that stye fast :)

I wear contacts and almost never go without eye makeup so I am very prone to styles. These ideas were very helpful. I also get a sock (preferably a new one) and pour regular, uncooked rice into it and tie it so the rice can’t fall out. Put it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds and then let it sit on your eye. This makeshift compress stays warm way longer than a wet towel and feels amazing on an infected eye!!!

      Hello Michelle,
Thank you so much for leaving this great tip. The next time I update this post, I will be sure to include this idea. I can see how this would work nicely, the warm rice will conform to the eye socket while providing soothing heat. I like it :)

Hi, I’ve been getting styes for the past year& the tea bag method always helped, but now i have 2 internal styes on top eyeli d for 5 months& nothing iswworking. Been to dr. They say use hot compress but no luck. Any suggestions?

      March 5, 2012 | 6:36 pm

      Hi APG,
The tea bag is a very popular method, I’m glad it has worked for you in the past. Wow, five months is some time to be suffering with these internal styes. The only thing the doctor offered was to use hot compresses, after 5 months??
Maybe lots of heat for longer amounts of time….give this a try. Hot compress against the stye eye and hold it there by way of a heating pad for longer durations at a time. Adjust the heat to a comfy level.

I wish you the best, if this don’t work, Please try a different doctor.

    Hello J Renee,
    Interesting comment, I must say.

So rubbing gold on a stye, and it will go away? Really, how do you suppose this is to be? How’s that working out for you? Old tales live on :)

I see you have one of those shifting styes ;) moved from your eyelid to your face….have you tried rubbing it with a gold ring?

    • J Renee
      February 14, 2012 | 2:05 am

Admin – My comments were not meant to be “interesting.” I advised I’d been successful in eradicating the formation of a full-blown sty by rubbing gold on the area before it developed into an actual sty. To answer your questions, “Dr. Phyllis,” that’s how it has “worked out for me” several times over 40+ year span. “How do I suppose this to be ?” , I don’t profess to know what chemicals real gold is comprised of, however, “common sense” suggests something in gold counteracts the sty & definitely helps the associated pain. I also found the “gold therapy” on several other websites when typing in, “Will rubbing gold on a sty make it go away?” I asked the person the same question that told me about the gold therapy & he did give me an answer, but that was over 40+ yrs, ago & I’ve forgotten what he said.

The sty is STILL on my eyelid/inside my eye, therefore, it’s not a “shifting sty.” I simply stated after trying the “hot mug/teabag” therapy, a water-like “pocket of skin” located immediately below the sty had shifted down further on my cheek after trying these suggestions.

I read all “admin” replies above & couldn’t help but notice you weren’t condescending /rude to others, therefore, I have to wonder why you felt compelled to be sarcastic toward me. Your attempt to insult my intelligence was disrespectful/uncalled for. Why reply at all if you had no intention of answering my question or trying to help me ? Btw, I’m 59+ yrs. old.

      • admin
        February 14, 2012 | 6:37 pm

        Hello J. Renee,
        Welcome back :)

I have to say this comment is even more interesting then the last.

Chemicals in gold? I believe there is only one chemical in gold, which is gold (Au).

Common sense, using common sense what do you believe is actually being transferred into your body by simply rubbing gold (gold ring) on a stye?

On several other websites I visited after typing in “Google” as you suggested “Will rubbing gold on a sty make it go away?, but i did add an “e” to the end of sty. I could not find one website ,where an actual medical doctor with or even without any credibility confirms the use of gold to heal a stye. In fact I couldn’t find any kinds of scientific data to back up your claims.

Did find lots of “My mother said”, “Grandma told me”, “My friend showed me this neat trick.” What that clearly shows, tall tales never die.

You are correct my comment was rude and I do apologize for that, as I took what you said as humorous without any serious merit to it. I am sorry :)

If you would like to have a serious discussion / debate on gold and it healing properties for a stye (must stay on topic). I’m all for it, but I will not waste time with any statements you have without data to back it up. He said, she said is not good enough.

        Btw, I’m 48 yrs old.

        Good day to you sir.

    February 10, 2012 | 5:12 pm

When I awoke yesterday, I saw what appeared to be a stye beneath my lower eyelid. There’s also a little pin-hole “opening” on my bottom eyelid. I put a hot washcloth on the area a couple of times last night & then rubbed my 14K gold ring on the area several times. I just tried the hot mug therapy, & the “bump” has shifted downward about an inch on my face. While the area isn’t as painful today,, the “bump” affects my vision somewhat. When I look down, the area looks/feels like I’ve been punched in the eye. A man told me back in the ’70′s if I ever got a stye, to rub gold on the stye. This method has always worked in the past. In fact, rubbing gold stopped the stye from forming & was gone the next day. Please understand the gold must be REAL, ie., 14K, 18K, etc. I’ve told several other people to rub gold on their styes & this method always worked for them.

My question is, since the stye has shifted downward on my face, will the stye dissolve by itself if I continue the hot mug remedy? Are there any “over-the-counter” salves or medications that will make the stye dissolve naturally ? Any further “light” you could shed on this matter would be greatly appreciated as I do not have insurance & don’t want to have to go to an opthamologist. Thank you for this site & any future information you/others may provide.

After doing the tea bag method or the boiling water, will they stye just go away? I heard you had to pop it with a needle?

    • admin
      February 13, 2012 | 3:11 pm

      Hello Mariah,
Please don’t be poking at your eye with a needle, you may cause more harm then good. I believe this is horrible advice to give or follow.

Applying these above methods will help the stye to heal faster while giving comfort from the pain. Will the stye just go away? Yes, over time, but not in an hour or even overnight as many would leave you to believe. These methods are to help get rid of a stye, by speeding up the recovery time.

my son is 5 yrs old and he continuously get styes on his eye. i have tried the warm rag and wiping his eye with Johnson and Johnson no tear baby shampoo and that’s not working. can anyone assist me on another way to prevent these from forming on my 5 year old eye?

    • admin
      February 13, 2012 | 3:03 pm

      Hello latesha,
You are doing right by keeping your son’s eye cleaned, J&J works wonderful, but the bigger issue is why. Why is the little guy having recurring styes? Could there be a possibility of a simple virus he has that is causing this? This is when my best advice would be, time to visit a doctor, if you haven’t done so already. I can just image the discomfort he is always going through, styes are painful enough for us adults to deal with.

I wish you and your son the best, hopefully it’s something simple, with a quick remedy to getting rid of his styes.

    Hello Danielle
You are most welcome. What a bummer getting styes so often, sorry to hear this. I could not even imagine having to deal with one, maybe once a year….but twice a month :(

I hope you have better luck using the tea bag, but if not, did you see the boiled egg method? Give off soothing heat for a very long time.

Hope you get rid of that stye fast, best of luck!

Thank you! I always try the warm compress, but you have to run the cloth under hot water like every 3 minutes to make the cloth stay warm and the process kind of gets annoying. Hi Anna
I’m sorry to hear you have a stye :(
I hope they work for you too. Just remember whichever one you decide to try…multiple times throughout the day works best.

      Have a wonderful day!

I also have problems with stye’s but I’m confused on how to add these mixtures to get rid of it, if its on my eyelid. I think for now i will just do the cloth and tea cup. Because i don’t want to risk getting anything into my eye. Also if people sleep with make up on this is one way for me to get a stye. so DON’T SLEEP WITH MAKE UP ON! styes kill and we just want them to go away!

      January 16, 2012 | 12:38 pm

      Hi susan,
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment, sorry to hear you have eye stye problems :(

Any of the methods above that include adding addition healing herbs, are added to the water to make a mix. Not to the stye itself.

Very good tip to share..Sleeping with makeup on is a big mistake. Being aware of this will help cut down on eye styes, especially if you are prone to them.

      Have a good day susan

I told my coworker about my stye today. She said to rub gold on it.Then it should heal within a day or so.I told her I don’t have gold so she let me rub my eye with her white gold ring. Not sure if it will work. I’m not going to wait to find out because I want to try the tea bag thing. Just wanted to share.

      January 14, 2012 | 2:45 pm

      Hello katy
I have read about rubbing gold on a stye as a method to get rid of a stye, but don’t see how it could possible help. Everything I have seen points to it as being just an old wives’ tale / urban legend. I think you will have much more success using a tea bag a few times during the day.
I hope your eye stye heals fast.

Hi:) what do you mean by making a seal with the stye eye and the mug of warm water? this stye has been killing me for a few days now:( thanks!

    • admin
      January 1, 2012 | 12:35 pm

      Hi Rachel S.
It’s very easily done. In a sitting position, place the mug directly in front of you on a table. Now, bend your head down as to peer into the bottom mug, continue slowly until you make contact to the rim, thus forming a seal over the stye. It may be best to have a mug that is not too wide, a smaller opening will make a better seal. Please make sure the mug is held securely while doing so.

      Happy New Year :)

Thanks for the help everyone, my stye is in the extremely swollen process and a white bump. I had a hot wash cloth on all night and this morning. How will I know if its draining? This is my first one.

    • admin
      December 29, 2011 | 8:43 am

      Hello Bre,
Sounds like your stye is in the early stage of forming. Great that you started right away with the warm compress, keep at it. Hopefully by doing so, you will keep the swelling and pain to a minimum (lets hope so). If it does fill and swell much bigger, there will be no mistaking when it drains as you will see the discharge left on the compress.

Good luck and keep applying the compress, you’ll be glad you did at such an early stage.

      Hello Bridget.
That is a very long time for someone your age to have to suffer with a painful stye. I hope you have been to see a Doctor for help. Usually a common stye should heal on it’s own within a week or two.

You are welcome for the stye healing tips and wish you the best :)

    Hello hollie,
Nothing like the pain from a stye :( . They can be really painful for some folks. I’m sorry nothing is relieving your stye pain. Are you positive it is a stye? Just asking, as you will know better then me, but if it something more serious then a common eye stye, please see a doctor.
While using these methods, you need to be persistent, don’t expect much after one or two applications. Try using the warm compress as much as possible through out the day.

    Hi Sharnie,
I’m sorry to hear about your stye, and yes they can be painful. Sounds as though you don’t have much on hand to try being at school so you are very limited on trying most of these methods. Keep on with the warm compress, if that is all you have to work with, better then nothing. Maybe a visit to the school nurse, if one is available.
I hope the pain goes away and your stye heals soon :)

I am 13 and knowing younger people it hurts allot more because they feel they can’t handle it, i have a stye on my eye and it hurts so much, i don’t want to stay home from school as it is only my last week anyway, i have been putting a warm rag on my eye for about twenty minutes and it hasn’t helped, things like honey and tea bags and all that stuff i can’t do because i don’t have any of that, is there anything else i could try.

a useful trick I learned from my doctor for my daughters stye…use a hardboiled egg. The shell retains the heat longer and you really need to constant heat to make a difference.

      Hello sharip,
Wow! What an excellent useful trick you have shared. Heated hard boiled egg will retain the heat, giving the infected eye a constant supply of relieving warmth. Very Good share indeed! I’ll be looking forward to hearing how this method works out for anyone that gives it a try.

Thank you sharip and have a great day :)

    Hey Jordan,
Sorry to hear about your stye…Good thing is you have time on your side, nine days to your B-day. The stye is only three days old so it’s still actively forming. Right now you are fighting an active stye and not one that has already developed and started it’s healing processes. stick with one method, and repeat it. One application will never be enough to get rid of a stye.
Please don’t stick a needle in your eye!! Only asking for more trouble.

  71. Jordan
    December 2, 2011 | 10:20 am

okay, my first stye so happy…not really. i tried the tea bags all they do is sooth it no shrinkage of puffiness whats so ever. the eye drops just cause my vision to be blurry, the mug and hot water thing just soothes the pain again no shrinkage. i’m this close to take a syringe and draining the sucker. i can see the clear white circle with a black head, my guess is thats the area where it formed. my birthday is in 9 days, and i’ve had this stye for 3 days now. i know ooo big deal but i’m the type of person who just gets things done quick and fast. if i have to drain the sucker with a needle i will. are there any other new ideas out there?

I have a Military Ball to go to in 36 hours. Will the mug trick work in time? Also, I know makeup is probably a horrible idea, but I’m doing it anyway. Beauty is pain, right?

      December 1, 2011 | 2:15 pm

      Hi Sara,
The mug trick is a great way to relieve the painfulness of the stye and hopefully bring down the condition to where it is bearable. Thirty six hours is not much time, try repeating the method every few hours and see what that does. I hope you enjoy the Military Ball, best of luck to you.

    Hello Tyler,
The common stye will form in the area along the edge of one’s eyelid. Now if you are feeling a lump inside the eyelid this may be an internal hordeolum. Best thing to do, is visit your doctor for confirmation that it is an internal hordeolum and proper treatment. Hope your eye heals fast :)

    November 18, 2011 | 1:19 pm

It’s the 3 year anniversary of me having my stye. It won’t leave!! I’ve tried every treatment possible (including doctors trying to remove it on several different occasions). Everyone had something different to say, and the last doctor pretty much said “deal with it”. Then I was advised accutane too but that didn’t help for the stye. I don’t know what to do. I think it’s pretty much a scar at this point, but every now and then it feels even more irritated as though it was still “active”.

    • admin
      November 19, 2011 | 12:27 am

      Hey Jon,
Three years, wow that is an awful long time to be dealing with a stye. Is there any possibility it’s not a stye but scar tissue from maybe healing in a bad way? Boy, I can imagine how awful it is to have this for so long.

A stye is also called a hordeolum. A sty is a pimple caused by skin germs that infect the tunnel through which the eyelashes emerge. A stye is usually tender and eventually develops a pointy white head before the head bursts. They can be quite tender and irritating.

A moist, hot compress will speed resolution. Antibiotics are not necessary. The stye has to drain, whether on own or with a doctor’s help. Sometimes sty’s can grow so large that surgical drainage is advised.

There are some look-alike lesions that can mimic a stye, so if it doesn’t clear promptly in 5-7 days be sure you see your ophthalmologist for an evaluation.

    August 5, 2011 | 6:40 pm

      Hello Harini,
The best way, would be to use a clean soft cloth, dipped into the mixture after boiling for a few minutes, then applying it to the infected eye, by dabbing gently, and repeating.

      Hope this helps…

here is an EXTREMLEY fast way to get rid of a stye. boil some water or just really hot water could work, and pour it into a mug about half way. Then put your eye with the stye in the mug and rest your head on the rim. wait a few minutes and boom your stye will immediately be shrunken. (if the water is too hot, put your eye on, then off for a few seconds then on again, etc, until you can keep it on there. the steam really helps.)

Gonna give these a try next time, I usually use an over the counter suave, but it feels very uncomfortable to keep in the eye, and blurs my vision. These stye remedies sound to be a better way to treat them. I plan to keep some of the ingredients listed on hand at all times. Thank you, for a very helpful blog :)

My Daughter woke yesterday, with a swollen eye, ended up being a stye. I felt bad because of the pain she was having ( her first bout with a stye) and decided to do a search online for a remedy. I want to thank you for such a detailed list of different ideas to try, I never new, with just some simple household items, stye relief was possible, thank you……

You just lay the tea bag on your eye.

          Hi Li$$a
I did answer you on teabag selection in your last post, maybe you missed it. Any teabag brand will work, yes there are 100kinds on the market, but it’s only brand and flavors that set them apart. Tea is the main ingredient in every teabag. Anyone will do.

I suffer from styes multiple times a year, home care methods that you have listed do work wonderful. I always make sure I keep some of these ingredients at home always. This blog should be very helpful for those looking for a safe way to sooth a painful stye.

I have a problem with styes, get them a few times a year, very painful. The tips you posted are very good, my favorite is using a teabag. It does sting at first but gives fast relief. It’s the method I would recommend trying, very helpful post.

Go and buy Brewers Yeast right away. The same day you start using this the pain goes away. Within 3 days you don’t even know you have it. Keep using it for 1 week just to make sure it goes away completely.

If you get the bigger tablet take it 3 times a day. If you get the smaller round tablet take at least 2 of them 3 times a day.

Read up on Brewers Yeast and Eye Health.
